Album Notes
The Roues Brothers
Billy and Steven "Muddy" Roues have been making music together since they were kids. They are journeymen in the music business, having crossed paths with some of the greats of Blues, Rockabilly, Rock'n'Roll, Country, Soul, and Rhythm and Blues. The experience of working with those artists and creative people that were and still are mentors and idols to them, whether onstage, in the studio, in films and television or in the songwriting process, has left an indelible mark on the music the Roues Brothers are making today.
Their first CD under the name, The Roues Brothers, is also the first release on their own fledgling label, UpSouth Recordings, and is a mix of all those influences and more. Muddy's wailing blues harp kicks off the album on Behind The Dixie Sun, an ode to the brother's enthusiasm for collecting old 78 rpm's of great roots music. The driving Texas boogie beat, raw electric guitar and stark vocal treatment sets the stage for a 15-song assault that never lets up. It's very bluesy though not necessarily a blues album. It's not Rock but it rocks! This CD is more like a real Rock'n'Roll record recorded in the 50's and 60's. The boys tip their hats to many of their heroes while forging an original sound and style underscored by the great writing of Billy, Muddy and long time associate, Gary Solomon. The title track, Undaunted, is a fitting anthem whose chorus will tell you a lot about what makes The Roues Brothers tick and keep on ticking;
"I don't care at all if the next big thing has come
I'll still feel it in my heart pounding like the beat of a drum
And I won't change my song 'cause by it's spell I'm haunted
And I will carry on ... Undaunted"
Several of the songs on this offering are in movie soundtracks such as the rockabilly rave-up, Adam's Rib, which is featured in the film, "My Best Friend's Wife" released on DVD in 2004. The duet harmony of Daydreaming, with it's nod to the Everly's, is in two movies; the Italian made, Fuori Dal Mondo, recently released in the USA as Not Of This World, and, along with Just Like Humpty Dumpty, the film, In His Life; The John Lennon Story.Also, of note, Billy , Muddy and drummer Joe Geary are featured on a recent release called, "Checks Thugs and Rock'n'Roll" by DMC (of RunDMC). This is the rapper's first solo album and the song is co-written by the Roues Brothers, DMC and Neil Young.
Primarily a quartet featuring Billy on Guitars, mandolin and vocals, Muddy on stand-up bass, harp, guitar and vocals, Gary Solomon on keyboard, electric bass, accordion and guitar and Joe Geary/Ed Steinberg/Abe Speller on drums, the Roues Brothers bring to their live shows the same excitement found on this disc. As one reviewer put it, "This is adventurous, original music grounded in bedrock that's uniquely American. These guys are damn good, and you'll doubtless discover riches here that I've totally missed. These folks have the goods: they can write, sing and play stuff from all over the musical map and they always sound like they mean it."

Nothing Compares
This to me is by far the best recordings I have ever heard from this pair of musical wonders. I have been listening to this CD for about 2 weeks without taking it out of my player and it seems like it would be a sin to take it out ever. Every track on this CD is a classic. This CD takes you back to real roots of music by two of the best songwriters you will ever hear. If any of you miss this one, you will never forgive yourself.

These guys break my heart they are SOOOO good!
I had just seen Finn and the Sharks do a reunion and my husband had been a regular at their concerts in the 80s. I fell in love with the "tightness" of their whole act and the same goes for this CD; the music makes it hard to stay in your chair it is totally danceable and fun and the lyrics are wise and funny--just a total deal. What kills me is that if these guys didn't rocket to stardom in the 80's--what a sin for the entire music industry. Undaunted (again, the lyrics are so obviously written by someone who's got a clue) is my favorite on the CD and tonight we plan to attend another Roues band "Lucky 7" (if I can stay up that late).
