Longview

by R P R

Longview is an album in the old-fashioned sense: intended to be listened to all the way through, in order, lyrics in hand. Expansive and uplifting; poignant and dramatic, humourous and exuberant, it's powerful, driving music in the story-song tradition.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
It's a powerhouse band of contrasts, subtleties, humour, and the agility to go from full rampage to a whisper in a heartbeat.

"This was my first RPR show, and I marvelled at the talent and versatility on stage....Go see RPR the next chance you get."
Jesse Wilkinson, Rrampt

It's that combination of vigour, poignancy and personality upon which RPR's reputation is built: arresting music, stories, laughter - and some astonishing vocal harmonies.

"Their performance Saturday was a joyous occasion... loud, vibrant and exciting... at times with roaring vigour at others with sparse intensity, creating many moods...songs with great depth, full of humour, pathos and love."
The Beat Magazine, Mar 11, 2013

To be sure, the harmonies remain, as does the energy, the finely-honed songwriting, the penchant for humour and the twinkling eyes. Restrained and thoughtful or full-on rocking, this is a band of contrasts, subtleties and great good humour. Vibrant vocal harmonies, foot-stomping and hair-swirling exuberance, or stripped back to beautifully understated instrumentation and a single, haunting vocal line.

This is a band that's much easier to listen to than they are to describe. If they lived 150 miles to the south they'd be called "Americana", but even a cursory listen will tell you they are most definitely Canadian. A concert goer described their sound as "Crosby Still Nash meets Pink Floyd", and while not everything they do would fall into that particular Venn diagram, it's not bad.

Rob Ritchie (keyboards), Al Parrish (bass) and Steve Ritchie (guitars) were around in the old days when Tanglefoot won Best Vocal Group at the 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Percussionist and singer/songwriter Beaker Granger completes the whole, with a focus that is broader and a musical palette more varied. To be sure, the harmonies remain, and so does the energy, the finely-honed songwriting, the penchant for humour and the twinkling eyes.
