Album Notes
Rubymink's mercurial fourth album 'Chimaera' explores rich sonic landscapes evoking themes of desire, dystopia, ambient spaciousness, and wonder. Beginning with dark, pulsing undercurrents in 'Shapeshifter’, and dives into all-consuming desire in 'Temptation’.
‘Parhelion' references metaphysical aspects of nature’s beauty, while 'Slip Away' evokes medicated escapism and rebellion.
'Apparition' is a ghostly electronic instrumental, and leads into the mediative, celestial-themed, 'Gravity Assist', incorporating field recordings of wind chimes and minimal acoustic guitars. 'Starlight' is a simple melody to truth and the record ends with the haunting, yet aspirational acoustic track, 'Hinterland'.

The intention was to create the listening experience similar to how one would listen to a vinyl record or a cassette, with one side being it's own universe, and on the reverse, another world. Chimaera begins with dark ambient complexity and ends with calm simplicity.

Recording began in shortly after the release of the third album ‘Voyager’, in North Portland Oregon during the rainy winter months. Rubymink performed some of the songs live in progress in various venues while developing the record, and during this time, Stevyn Llewellyn worked with longtime friend Felicity Fenton on additional vocal accompaniment which fleshed out the record with a richer sound. This is Rubymink's most complex album, yet at the same time, strikingly minimal. This record represents a shift in the approach to songwriting, where Stevyn focused on creating soundscapes and cinematic environments with a strong undercurrent of desire and longing throughout.

The album was written and recorded in Portland, Oregon by Stevyn Llewellyn, with additional vocals by Felicity Fenton. Additional vocal accompaniment was provided by New York based singer Cati James on 'Temptation'. The completed album was mixed and Mastered at Mindcycle Studios by Ryan Connor in Denver, Colorado in July and August of 2018.
