Album Notes
Hip-Hop at its very core is about expansion. It's about grasping new concepts and ideas and expanding the vision of current musical genres. Hip-Hop has reshaped R&B, Rock-n-Roll, Alternative Jazz and even Gospel Music. With the success of Kirk Franklin and The Cross-Movement the culture has tapped into an entirely new market. Now creating a new path within this inspirational culture is SHANKS. Divinely raised in the streets of Baltimore, MD, SHANKS blends a classic street style with the message of a disciple. His music blends styles from a diverse musical background. It is difficult to categorize him as a gospel rapper because his music has something for everyone. You are liable to hear Rock-n-Roll, R&B or straight hardcore Hip-Hop. But let's get down to the nitty-gritty grimy, when we listen to a Hip-Hop
artist there is only one thing we want and that's lyrics. This kid definitely has them. His formula allows him to display his devotion to the Lord and his Christian soldier mentality. Ready to go to war for the cause, SHANKS draws on his personal experiences to send a message of hope, strength and redemption for all those going through the struggle. But don’t get it twisted; because SHANKS also lets those who question his dedication to the purity of the art form know that his skills are not to be taken lightly. Those that wish to test his lyrical prowess do so at their own risk. They say the streets are watching, well they not only need to watch but also hear and feel the message of this innovator to the Hip-Hop scene.

In Russ Shanks latest effort "Underdog" he shows us that the kingdom and hip hop can coincide. Shanks manages to grab our attention showing confidence, without seeming arrogant, unlike his mainstream counterparts. From the beginning he tells us, "it would be nice if I made the A-list / but if im honest I would rather make the judgement day list" Shanks ability to shine, without overshawdowing his subject matter is consistent throughout Underdog. On the title track Shanks expresses his readiness for the radio, but the reality is, mainstream has yet to embrace this genre. Still that doesnt stop Shanks from displaying his skills as an mc, and still delievering his message as a minister. In 'shanks is" , one of my favorite tracks, shanks aggressive style rides a crazy beat, with production to match. With standout tracks like "weapon" , "take it back" and "barbarians" Shanks proves himself as a lyrical force. In "dangerous" ,with a catchy hook that cries radio freindly, Shanks proves hes ready for mainstream. Throughout Underdog Shanks reamains steadfast, showing a clear vision. Overall this is a solid effort, that delivers.

Hiphop artist
Man, I have to say that this guy is bringing the essence of real hiphop, but with a very powerful message at the same time which in reality makes it Hip Hop. He sounds kind of like Lil Raskull & with a touch of the WU-Tang.
The "UnderDog" is a great name to fit what he brings, becuz the production is banging and his lyrics are top class for an artist who is not on the top ten hiphop/rap charts worldwide, and even the featured artists are holding their own on the album. I love the "Barbarians" song.
I gave this album a 5 star rating on lyrics, content, heart, passion, and production, becuz its hard to listen to a album from track to track but you can do that with this album, and a 4 becuz of my own passion to hear a mellow back track with Shanks tearing it down lol. I also think he gave something to everybody, and he gave glory to his savior."Keep doing it Shanks"!!!

I must say that this a wonderful CD. It can reach the young and the young at heart! I’m not one that prefers rap music but I like this cd and I like the positive message that Russ Shanks is getting across to the masses. Shanks keep up the good work and continue to let God use you to deliver a positive message to this world. With all of the negative rap music that is out now it is a Blessing to hear music that does not demean women, use profanity or promote violence!!! I love it!! May God continue to Bless you in all you endeavors!!!

Nelson, I'm finishing your CD right now. I've got tell you up front that I haven't really given a crap about rap since Public Enemy. I like my music honest, sociopolitically charged and relevent. I've got to tell you that your music is hard, fresh, and modern with a hint that takes me back to a more soulful era. It's catchy, beat filled, musical, and danceble without any hint of being dirivitive or irrelevant. I like it's minimalist assault on the senses and it's lyrics and their delivery. You're honest in what you write and how you tell point of view. It's obvious that you're not creating some phony scenarios ala those wannabe gangstas that I'm sick of hearing. I don't want to use any cliches like you're "keeping it real", but you're uncompromisingly straight and true and I can't detect any hint of bull. You're telling us about what you love and I can tell that it's no joke. I'm enjoying your CD better than anything Warner Bros., Columbia, and the rest of the Big Shots crank who crank out so-called "music" like assembly line peanut butter. Nelson, who knew you had it? Great original mixes, good spittin', and just a joy of music and fun comes out of this CD. I can tell that you love what you do and it makes me love it too. Keep it up!!!

I would like to give a PRAISE SHOUT out to Russ Shanks I didn’t think that I would like every song on the c-d but I am here to say that I truly liked every song on especially (WEAPON) and the last 3 songs on this track really touched me….I thank God for this positive message that he brings over the airwaves he’s creative, and sounds like to me that he is serious about JESUS and truly is a (WEAPON)..
