Album Notes
As its title indicates, this is a strong collection of 13 classic roots songs that singer/songwriter R.X. Bertoldi has covered in recent years, including five previously unreleased recordings. (It's also worth noting that only three of these covers were available on an actual CD until the current release--many having been digital singles only.) His inspired and creative readings of tunes by the Stones, Dylan, Tom Waits, JJ Cale and others make for a familiar and satisfying listening experience. Whether it's adding a couple unexpected measures to JJ Cale's timeless "After Midnight", or slowing down the Stones' classic pop tune "Get Off of My Cloud" to an acoustic blues tune, Bertoldi delivers. His love for the songs he's covering shines through in all cases, especially in his grooving rendition of the Stones' "Beast of Burden", and in his heartfelt, cello-enhanced take on Tom Waits' "Heart of Saturday Night".

Bertoldi's collection benefits from the excellent support received from acclaimed Seattle producer/mulit-instrumentalist Johnny Sangster, and the talented players he assembled for some of these sessions, as well his own son's drumming on several cuts; Even his lively takes on classics such as "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Run Rudolph Run" here sound fresh. With his rockabillied rendition of "Rudolph", R.X. offers a seasonal cover, and along with his warm take on Randy Newman's "You've Got a Friend in Me" (known largely through the "Toy Story" movie series) the album provides fun moments for even the youngest of listeners.

He offers three Dylan covers, including the popular "Wagon Wheel" and two lesser-known songs: "If I Don't Be There By Morning" and "Lord Protect My Child". Bertoldi's deep appreciation for Dylan's songwriting mastery is evident in all three performances. Two other notable renditions round out this anthology: A spirited bare bones acoustic take on the Faces' "Ooh La La", and his rousing rendition of John Hiatt's gem, "Slow Turning". R.X. Bertoldi pays tribute to several of his favorite songwriters and musicians here, and the results are a strong collection of recordings that any Roots/Americana fan is sure to enjoy.
