ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
MICHAEL SADLER - CLEAR

After nearly three decades with SAGA - including 18 albums with worldwide sales over 8 million - Michael Sadler has an impressive track record to fall back on. From his beginnings as the lead singer of the Canadian rock outfit in 1977, through his many guest appearances (Justin Hayward, Bobby Kimball, Ozzy Osbourne, Chain and many others), and in his long awaited solo career; Michael Sadler consistently proves his knack for crafting high quality songs that combine irresistible melodies with great lyrical detail. It has earned him respect from his peers, praise from critics and admiration from his devoted fan base. Sadler - who was born in Penarth, Wales, but moved to Canada at the age of three - is blessed with a versatile and buoyant voice that suits a wide range of styles. His performing skills are equally impressive. On stage, Michael plays his audiences with skill, experience and inspiration, frequently switching between keyboards, bass and - occasionally - his legendary briefcase drums. But Michael Sadler's not the kind of artist who lingers over successes from the past. He has a natural tendency to keep moving forward. And that's why he has recently released his first official solo album, titled CLEAR. Ready once more to display his outstanding talents as a singer, songwriter and musician.

Michael Sadler sounds better than ever!
CLEAR / Michael Sadler
MSI Records 2004

As far as singers go, Michael Sadler is in a league all his own. His work with SAGA has produced some of the finest rock music ever recorded. Songs like, "Don't Be Late", "On The Loose", "Time's Up" and "Flyer" are only a some of the songs that remain a permanent fixture on classic rock radio formats around the world. On his debut release, 'Clear', Michael Sadler shines with a collection a groove laden rock songs that are passion filled and will move you in ways unimaginable. His vocals are superb and sound better than ever with a group of great musicians backing him up. Handling the guitars are, LINO and Marcus Demi. The powerful rhythm section of bass player, Tim Emmons and drummer Chris Frazier provide Michael with a rock-solid foundation. All their talents coming together to create one of the best recordings I’ve heard this year. On ‘Clear’, Michael Sadler bares his soul about things that are obviously close to his heart. With tracks like, the album openers, "Who's Sorry Now", as a Saga fan I couldn't help but think of "Welcome to the Zoo" where Michael once again on this track sings about a "Sally" and also a "Danny"... it has the same feel not musically but lyrically how he's talking about a Sally, Suzy, Larry, Peggy, Annie, Bobby, Johnny... and so on! Then there is, "Who's Foolin' Who", that explodes with a choir, who trade vocals with Michael... "We scream in silence" ... "Why do we scream in silence?" The first single off the album, "One Minute", is a great song, if there were any justice in the world this song would be playing on every radio station on the planet. ’Clear’ is a must have for any Saga fan, if you like the songs that Michael Sadler has written over the years, this could easily be a compilation of his best moments, of course it is hard to equal the musical genius of the rest of the Saga group, but I believe the musicians on this release perform great and gives Michael his own identity, which is very good, sometimes it is very disappointing to buy a solo record just to find out it is pretty much the same as the group they are at. Overall, an outstanding piece of work by one of the finest voices in rock music. This is one album I would not hesitate in recommending to anyone who enjoys and appreciates good music. With this release, Michael Sadler makes that perfectly....CLEAR. - The Atomic Chaser

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

For those who know him well, Michael Sadler is a man of many faces. On stage, the lead singer of SAGA is the natural born entertainer. A professional with more than three decades of experience under his belt, a front man who's dynamic performances have won him the admiration of millions of loyal fans. Michael Sadler will never let a crowd down. But under the cool, confident and enigmatic appearance lies a more profound side to Michael's character. A part of him that - until a few years ago - he was reluctant to show. Because it was complicated. And maybe because it was embedded in the most sensitive parts of his soul. With the release of his first official solo album Michael Sadler makes a CLEAR statement. The most important message on CLEAR is that he is willing to show us the 'poetry in his soul', thus providing us with a couple of very personal lyrics. The Welsh born Canadian, who now lives in Los Angeles, has found the strength and inspiration for emotional ballads like I Can't Let Go and the aptly chosen title track. Also, it becomes CLEAR that Michael Sadler's contribution to the mighty SAGA sound is more than 'just' words and singing. Songs like Who's Sorry Now, I'm Not The Enemy, Lonely and One Minute show distinct similarities in songwriting, rhythmical approach and use of computer programmed synths and sequencers. SAGA fans may find the sophisticated production (Thomas Schmitt-Zijnen) a little on the safe side every now and then, but still attractive and recognizable. For one who has never heard SAGA, CLEAR offers a catching and passionate collection of pop and rock songs, including contributions from gifted artists like Marcus Deml (guitar), Lino (guitar), Chris Frazier (drums) and Tim Emmons (bass). The unmistakable highlights of the album are One Heart (an uplifting anthem with African beats and stunning harmonies) and Too Much Time On My Hands, featuring a gospel-like choir and a very, very catchy chorus. A versatile voice, some of his most intimate lyrics ever, clever pop songs. Michael Sadler is indeed a man of many faces. And talents.
