ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
S. A. Harris: Blues De’Ville

This project has been so rewarding for me. I was blessed recently to discover a book by Mike Senior called “Mixing Secrets (For the small studio)” and it has given me guidance that I have needed to understand the fundamentals of music production in order to produce a quality of recording that I can truly feel satisfied with producing. The result is this, my third album titled: “Blues De’Ville”. It’s all about tone, specifically the tone of the Blues De’Ville guitar amplifier that I play through. Based off of the Fender Bassman, it provides a palate of vintage tube tone that inspires you to play.

As a multi-instrumental solo artist who multi-tracks every instrument one at a time from a prison cell at the Oregon State Penitentiary, I listen to the tracks that make up this album, I can’t help but think about how the creative process works in my brain. It’s pure instinct and feel that just seem to flow out of me as I play. I am always amazed when I play back the tracks because it’s like discovering a new part of myself. Nothing is pre-planned. I do play live with a few musicians from time to time, and have been lucky enough to get them to contribute to some tracks as featured artists on my previous album “Steel Horse” as well as on “Blues De’Ville”. I have added an instrumental jam as track 11 that is part of a live stage performance with the musicians I jam with to give people a taste of what we do together.

It’s no secret that Peter Green, the British blues invasion guitarist and founding member of Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite blues artists. His phrasing, guitar tone and soulful vocals are second to none. Peter Green, like Eric Clapton extensively studied and emulated all the Blues records that they could get their hands on in the UK elevating the Blues to a whole new level. If we look at it honestly, these guys introduced America to our own music that had been overlooked due to racial issues of the day. Thanks to these musicians, music born in the Mississippi Delta was delivered to the ears of the masses instead of fading into obscurity. The first song I ever heard Peter Green perform was “Jumping at Shadows” as a founding member of “Fleetwood Mac.” Anthony “Duster” Bennett who was a friend of Greens wrote the song on a 1952 Gold Top Les Paul given to him by Green in 1968. Sadly, he died in a car accident in the mid 1970’s. I recently found the exact version of Jumping at Shadows I first heard as a young man, it was forever imprinted on my soul. I wanted to pay tribute to the great Peter Green and Duster Bennett by recording the song for the Blues De’Ville album. I will note that Gary Moore last revived this song on his “After Hours” and “Blues Alive” albums in the early 1990’s on the very same 1959 Les Paul guitar that Peter Green used in his recording of it in 1969.

Green’s amazing signature guitar tone that I love so much was attributed to his 1959 Les Paul that was sold to his friend Gary Moore in 1969 when Green walked away from music. Gary Moore played this guitar for most of his career, cementing the guitar and it’s stinging tone in history as a legend itself. The Humbucker pick-up, often called “The Holy Grail” pick-up by many artists had a tone unlike any other Humbucker out there. In the late 1990’s the pick-up was disassembled by Gary Moore’s guitar tech Dan Earlywine. to see if it could be determined why this particular pick-up has such a unique mid-range tone. It turned out that although the pick-up was correctly wired, the magnet polarities were not opposite each other but assembled in the same direction, giving this pick-up a very pronounced mid-range character that brought out the legendary stinging mid range accents in both Green and Moore’s playing. Guitarists have long sought after this tone and now can buy pick-ups designed as the Holy Grail Peter Green Pick-up.

I hope you enjoy the music on this album, and Keep the Blues Alive!

Sincerely,
S. A. Harris
