Album Notes
Jack's Favorite Song is Country music with classic roots, but with a songwriting twist. The original songs tell stories about such real life issues as one postponing a passion in his life and finally deciding to heed Joseph Campbell's admonition to "follow your bliss. Another is a story of a friend's loss and his determination to live his life on memories. The decision of two lovers to rebuild their relationship through simple acts such as a Lover's Get Away. And then there's the somewhat humorous tale of a man who spends his life in honky tonks and wants it no other way, even if it results in his demise. The title song of the album is a song based on true events. It deals with the apparent PTSD of a young Marine recently returned from combat in the Middle East and his buddy Jack, who did not return. That song is my tribute to all our men and women in the armed services of our country. Regret is a song woven around an old man who sits alone in a bar (a similar man may be found in many bars). This one remembers a lady he met at a dance hall in Odessa, TX in 1958 at which Tommy Allsup's band played. It has been written that Buddy Holly came to Odessa and played drums in a New Year's Eve show with Tommy's band on Dec. 31, 1958. A final original tune, Go Tell Your Mister, is a light-hearted love story with a upbeat polka rythym from Jerry Don Motley.
Several cover songs are included in the album, including three written by friends who happened to be very good Austin singer/songwriters (J.L Benton, Bobby Pounds and Glen Collins). Two classic country songs are also covered simply because we like them a lot and get numerous requests to play them in live shows.
I sincerely hope you will enjoy this album. For me the work put into this collection of songs has been a labor of love and one I love to share.
Sam Bentley
