Album Notes
First of all, I'd like to dedicate this album to my good friend, Joseph Kintzel. who passed away suddenly in December of 2018. Joe was one of my biggest supporters when it came to my music. He wanted me to put out some of my songs so we printed up some CD's. Joe wrote this on the back cover of the CD...."A few years ago, Sam gave me a demo CD. I loved it and asked for more. I convinced him to record some of my favorites and the result is Northern Lights. It's music that goes with a sunset, a rainy day or that drive to and from work. It's rhythmic mood music with attitude"......Thank you Joe.......As a keyboard player, i love the style of Herbie Hancock. Chick Corea's endless creativity is amazing. George Duke was an all time favorite of mine. Joe Sample was great with The Crusaders and his solo career .. Jeff Lorber's 'playing, writing, and studio production work is incredible. Alex Bugnon has definitely influenced me..... Chester Thompson's organ playing with Tower of Power . ......It made hauling that Hammond B3 around worth it. Bill Champlin and the Sons of Champlin was always being played up in Iowa, where I'm originally from. Other influences would include Bob James, Bobby Lyle, Russell Ferrante and The Yellowjackets, Steps Ahead, Weather Report, Stevie Wonder, Thelonius Monk ,Bob James and numerous others. My album contains some of my early music from 1990's such as Man In Blue, written after the passing of my Grandfather to current creations such as Chelsea's Garden. I even picked up my tenor saxophone to add some parts. Just Pick It Up was titled to reflect this. I had't touched it in 15 years.
By the way, my real last name is Schnieders. So many singers I worked with over the years always stumbled when it came to saying Schnieders that i a new name was born. One night a singer I was working with called me Sam Diego, like the city. I added the "a" and went with it. One final thing...I want to name a few people on the album. Velvet Williams is singing the "vocal motifs" on South Beach and Chelsea's Garden, Dale Horton "Dashin' Dale Day" is playing bass on Mr. Tombs and Ant Knees. Fred Watson is adding congas and percussion on South Beach, Man In Blue and Latin Storm. Thanks for listening.......SAM.
