Album Notes
Sam Newton is a musical architect; a local Sydney boy structuring his intelligent and whimsical style around distant times and alluring effigy. The result is one of bursting potential; of a raw, honest alt-country experience where the only thing exceeding his compassionate and vigorous stride is his winter beard.

“Simply Beautiful Stuff...” – Emma Swift (‘In The Pines’ FBI Radio)

Born and raised in the Hills district of Sydney, Sam’s earliest memories are put to the soundtracks of Africa, Baker Street, and Riders on the Storm - with all lyrics remembered by heart. This works in combination with the grunge 90’s music playing across the hallway from his eldest sister’s room to instill an early appreciation for music in general. In the years that followed, many of the great songwriting gurus were discovered and by result, Sam’s own songs began to emerge at around age 16.
Maintaining a blood link to the Riverina area of Regional NSW (now the only family member left in the city) and a firm love for the likes Johnny Cash and the Steel String Guitar can perhaps be attributed to the resulting Alt-Country style of songcraft. Sam Newton’s music is country in soul, city in bones.

“Enchanting” – Ross Fear (as Featured Artist on ‘Australian Spectrum’ Radio)

The recent self-titled Debut EP release (Produced by Melvin Tree 2011) is filled with a well-crafted selection of contrasting tunes that range in style from folk to alt-country with use of banjo, pedal steel, violin, flute and more, played by some of Sydney’s finest musicians (Jason Walker, Josh Schuberth, Leroy Lee).
Sam’s lush arrangements illustrate a crossroads between songwriting and composing - a Wagnerian opera where lyrics and music are regarded on a level playing field. Both are conjured to force one to reverie in distant times, to recreate life experiences. This unique style of songcraft sets Sam Newton aside from the masses.
With relentless imagery in lyricism and a musical delivery that appeals to a broad spectrum of musical tastes, Sam’s Debut EP is one to look out for. (Available online for digital or physical order)

“An important link in the inner city Sydney acoustic scene with songs that are infectious and thoughtful in arrangement... Reminiscent of Sufjan Stevens and Neil Young...” – Chris Gillespie (Singer/Songwriter)

Having played with a fairly consistent lineup for more than 18 months, headlining venues such as The Raval, The Basement, and the Vanguard (just to name a few), Sam is currently working on his first full-length album with plans on a release date in early 2012. A national launch tour in support of his Debut EP is also being planned for the end of 2011, hitting all major capital cities.
