ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
“Illuminations” continues the research started since the first work “Resonance”, developed around texts of ancient music from the Western repertoire. This musical project highlights our heritage – our cultural and artistic legacies as musicians of the 21st century. The sonic architecture of the remarkable places we encountered determines this approach that brings to life a great tradition of the world of classical music: “unwritten” music.
Beyond the divisions and musical classifications - medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, contemporary, jazz, world music, contemporary music – it is ultimately about good music.

Samuel Cattiau discovered his voice, with its high and precise range, during applied arts training in France. He then studied vocal technique and learned about the depth within the medieval songs of Northern Europe, the monody and polyphony, as well as the Renaissance and repertoire. Samuel developed his vocal timbre across several octaves, from baritone to countertenor. He went on to encounter different traditions, cultures and monastic communities that practice singing. His research is based on written music, oral transmission, «unwritten» classical music, and the relationship between architecture and sound. www.samuelcattiau.fr

Quentin Dujardin, guitarist, composer and producer, has created a unique universe for many years. His various collaborations with musicians range from harmonica player Toots Thielemans to American producer Lee Townsend, through Iva Bittova, Mahsa Vadhat or Manu Katché. He is an ambassador of the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. www.quentindujardin.be

This second album has given us an opportunity to invite talented musicians to participate in the adventure.
Matthieu Saglio, a French cellist living in Spain, brings us sounds from the Mediterranean, such as his very personal adaptations of the famous flamenco rasgueados.

Leo Ullmann, a young, classically trained, virtuoso violinist who performs with celebrated Hungarian violinist Roby Lakatos, shares his taste for improvisation and gypsy music.

Doron David Sherwin, an American cornettist seduced by Italy - where he lives when not travelling the world with large musical ensembles (Concerto Palatino, l’Arpegiatta, etc.) – and the incomparable sounds of his flutes and wooden cornetts.

Bijan Chemirani, an Iranian whose great sense of improvisation and impeccable technique make him a highly sought-after percussionist. Residing in France, he forms an exceptional trio with his father and brother.
