One of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the Year, simply stunning
When I say that it is one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the Year, simply stunning and a masterpiece I mean it. Here is why
On November 6th I was walking through St Pancras International Railway Station on my way to a meeting when I came across Samuele Rossini- The St Pancras Pianist. I am not a pianist myself but I was mesmerised by his skill on the most battered piano I had ever seen. After his performance of one 4 song medley he stopped to receive a standing ovation from the fellow commuters who like me simply had to stop and listen to this man play the piano. His humility and incredible shyness made me want to discover more about this man playing a piano in a railway station. Through my 5 or 6 words of Italian such as Ciao, Graci, Arriverderci, Mancini, Di Canio and which football team do you support we established after being made redundant in Italy again he decided to sell all his keyboards, pianos, organs and possessions and relocate to London to try a new life. After finding some accommodation on Grays Inn Road , one day he walks into St Pancras and comes across 2 Pianos without the words I'm Yours Play Me written across them. Sitting down he begins to play and so to the album.
On the 19th December whilst I was in a meeting at Searcys St Pancras Grand I came across a moleskin notepad left in the gents. I promptly gave this to Samuele and said whilst I have my meting if you could record an album write down what tracks you would record and what you would call it. The simple 12 track listing took Samuele about 12 minutes, we went downstairs, through it on the piano he played on, took the photo and signed it together. And so to the album
1. Ballad pour Adeline written by Paul de Seneille and Olivier Toussaint made famous by Richard Clayderman who is arguably one of the finest pianists in the world
2. Catherine Howard by Rick Wakeman, this was taken from his The Six Wives of Henry VIII Album which was his 1st album in-between YES
3. PRELUDIO A UNA DELUSIONE translated mean a prelude to a delusion. This is an original piece written, composed and produced by Samuele Rossini/Paul Curtis/Matt Waddle @ 14 Records. In it Rossini describes how he was anticipating waiting on hearing if he was going to be going on tour with Zucchero as his pianist, a week before he had a dream that it was going to fall through and sure enough it did. This piece describes how one can dream and then everything falls apart. This is the 1st of 5 self composed tracks on he album
4. Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence was the soundtrack for the 1970's film starring David Bowie, performed by Ruyichi Sakamoto, sadly the producer of this film Nagisha Oshima recently passed away. On You Tube under Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence Nagisha Oshima you can see Samuele playing a tribute to him
5. LULLABY FOR YOU is another Samuele Rossini/Paul Curtis/ Matt Waddle piece. I don't know the reasons behind this track but it has become my favourite on the album, when I listen to this track I can see a TV advert showing a long distance plane flying high above the clouds whilst passengers are sleeping or being given 5 star treatment. It seems that every few days I have a new favourite but right now I cannot stop playing this track
6. In a sentimental mood by Duke Ellington, what can you say abut this timeless classic that hasn't already been said. Here Rossini shows the softness of his touch on a piano, in no rush,he simply gets lost in the mood and takes you off somewhere in your head
7. ROMANZA SENZA PAROLE I have no idea what it's about, an original piece
8. NOTTURNO means night, again an original piece
9. Struggle for Pleasure/Cafe Del Mar Theme Tune originally by Wim Mertens and sampled in Energy 52's dance classic Cafe Del Mar. Growing up throughout the dance craze of late 80's early 90s there was only one place to go to for the summer. IBIZA. At the end of each day tourists would make their way to Cafe Del Mar to sit on the rocks and watch the sun go down whilst listening to Chilled out songs that take people a world away. A friend of mine was struck down with ME a few years ago and as part of her recovery she painted a series of painting that described her recovery from having no energy whatsoever to a little bit. I thought that she could show the exhibition at Cafe Del Mar and they could have an Energy 52 day. I started researching songs with the words energy in them and No 1 was Energy 52 Cafe Del Mar. it was only when Wikipedia search brought up the two producers behind it were inspired by an earlier piece by Wim Mertens called Struggle for Pleasure so there I am one day at St Pancras and whilst playing the theme from The Truman Show as an introduction it leads Nto this song. One of the most remarkable piano pieces I have ever seen or heard.
10 Love Theme from Nuovo Cinema Paradiso composed by Andrea Morriconemorricone, son of Enio Morricone, together in Electric Dreams indeed, another great film soundtrack
11. LA LANCIA DI LONGINO translates as the Lance of ?, I though it was the lance/spear of loneliness or longing. Not to sure but need Samuele to explain through a translator and finally
12. Amarcord from the 1970s Frederico Fellini Film of the same name, made famous by Italian Niño Rota at 2 minutes in if the piano reminds you of the Godfather that would be because Rota was the man behind the Theme Tune and music score to The Godfather 1 and Godfather II music scores
So there you have it, a debut album produced on a shoestring that should tug at your heart string and transport you off some place wether on your iPod, your iPad, your car, your office or the tranquility of your home. I ope you enjoy it and if you purchase please come back and leave a comment or visit on Facebook or Your Tube. And so with me few words of Italian I will say
Ciao, Graci, Arriverderci Samuel Rossini
I hope you are on your way
