ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Fly Her And Keep Her" was conceived and composed by Sara Curtin. It was recorded in Brooklyn, NY at Grand Street Recording, TreeFort Recording, and in multiple Brooklyn living rooms by Tomek Miernowski, Jeff Curtin, and Sara Curtin.

Musicians include Sara Curtin (music & lyrics, vocals, electric & acoustic guitar, ukulele, percussion, accordion, melodica, glockenspiel), Tomek Miernowski (electric & acoustic guitar), Spencer Zahn (electric & upright bass), Jeff Curtin (drums, organ), and Caroline Beck (violin).

The album begins with a lullaby - Song For Joey - that features themes heard throughout the 12 original songs. "Fly Her And Keep Her" is laced with vocal harmonies, ukulele, acoustic & electric guitar and bass (often together), glockenspiel, percussion, and a myriad of other beautiful sound makers.

We begin with an instrumental melody that leads us into the lullaby. The next 10 songs explore heartache, longing, and desperation as well as the playful joy and awe of childhood memory as in "Yellow Water". "Rosalie" was inspired by a short story by Kurt Vonnegut called "Miss Temptation" about a woman new to a town that was quick to judge her based on her beauty. The last song on the album , "Fly Her And Keep Her", inspired by the painting on the cover by artist Genevieve McClendon, describes the creative spirit as a kite - something controlled that can just as easily fly away out of reach. It ends with the questions 'does only foolish love die?' and 'do only foolish dreams die?' The painting is similarly entitled "Keep Her". Then to end the album is the same instrumental melody that we heard at the beginning of "Song For Joey", but this time slightly affected as though the theme has been twisted by the songs in between its appearances.

LYRICS:

1) Song For Joey-

knotted legs, far away
floor boards creak under the weight

hold my hands from miles away
and off we'll row. in a boat we'll sail away

with eyes wide and tired, too.

----------
2) Fetch The Broom:

quick! fetch the broom. i'm beginning to fall apart
i feel i might end up everywhere
it's starting. yes, i think it's about to start
so please, fetch the broom from somewhere

and while i'm waiting for that first piece to fall
i bite my lip and hope it won't shatter
i know you know it's not like me at all
but sometimes i'm porcelain inside here

i meant it when i said we'd better find the dustpan
i'm tumbling down piece by piece
my shoulder blades are running so very fast away
they're jumping ship, they know it's hopeless.

and soon all of me will be lying there down on the hardwood
but i dont want anyone to see, so please fetch the broom if you could.

-----------
3) I Knew All Along:

i went out looking for a place to rest my bones
i went out looking for a place to ease my mind
a quiet night, maybe a glass of wine,
but a quiet night with friends

but i found my footing on houston and started to run
i kicked up the dirt on the platform as you whispered, "come"
a silent ride through that sparkling skyline that dropped me right into your arms

i knew all along
that my weakness was far too strong

i took my seat at the bar to watch you moan
my hands, i kept them busy while you moaned
a single light doesn't burn that bring but i'll wring it dry just for fun.

too many sinners to hide my face
and too many familiars to point out my disgrace
let the spotlight shine down as i wow the crowd
and this clown falls back into your arms.

i knew all along
that my weakness was far too strong.

-----------
4) Yellow Water:

from up above the streets are filled
as a little girl, i saw them filled
with yellow water
running through buildings
like blood in the veins of the city
there's life in the yellow water

oh how i wish i was younger.
how i'd do things over.

and now from on the ground
the water's full of light
the streets are full of people all moving
keep moving.
they don't know about yellow water

oh how i wish i was younger.
how i'd do things over.

--------
5) Drink Up:

no fairy tale fantasy
no pillowcase veil for me
no starry eyes
no pale moonlight

just a slow romantic romanticizing you
just a shallow dreamer drowning in you

we're captive in the wood
it's dark and haunted and filled with wolves
we call them each by name
they come to us safe and tame

to a slow romantic romanticizing you
just a shallow dreamer drowning in you

pull me out.

one drink will do me in.

drink up.

--------
6) It's Not Me:

someday you will see a girl with long legs and dark curly hair
it's not me. no it's not me
she'll walk right by you on the street and never even think to treat you differently
but it's not me.

and maybe you will hold her hand and walk along that chilly sand without me
and maybe you will one day try to lay in bed and read aloud at night
but it's not me.

it's not me.

take her to a midnight show and watch her walk straight for the door
not me. no, not me.
she'll never dance up on the tables, empty beers around her ankles.
not me. no, it's not me.

it's not me.

and of all the other boys i meet, will one of them eventually see me purely like you saw me?
and if some girl gets to your heart, please treat her with some charity. sweet charity
though its not me.

it's not me.

---------
7) Airborne:

do you wanna go for a ride?
hop in the front seat and i'll drive
i'll really step on the gas
so if we hit a pothole we won't just crash.

we'll go soaring through the air,
maybe spin a few times.
haven't you always wanted to be airborne?

do you wanna go for a swim?
the water's freezing but let's jump in.
they'll find us up to our ears
stiff from the cold but shaking with fear.
they'll send a helicopter team
one by one pull our bodies out of that icy stream

we'll go soaring through the air,
maybe spin a few times.
but haven't you always wanted to be airborne?

-----------
8) Rosalie:

raise up your glasses to miss rosalie
she's a good friend and maybe you'll see
past her midnight black hair and devilish ways
bells on her ankles and hips that she sways

and every morning the same whiff of confident air
making every head turn and every heart stop
to dream what it might be like to lay beside her
but silence unbroken's like fish with no water

and last night miss rosalie went to a bar
and flirted with you - you know who you are -
went so far as to ask you to buy her a drink
clear as the bells on her feet when they ring

and every morning the same whiff of confident air
making every head turn and every heart stop
to dream what it might be like to lay beside her
but silence unbroken's like toast with no toaster

and our heroine got herself home late last night
and put herself to bed with a simple recline
her jingle bells lay on the box by her bed
she clicked off the light and in darkness she said,
"goodnight little rosalie, now shut your eyes
and dream all of princes and thieves in disguise."

----------
9) Dreamlife

do you know why i even go to sleep?
at nighttime, the world is but a dream.
and in life, you are what you seem
but nighttime, i can make you be

a shooting star or horse with wings
or a midnight owl that sings in the trees

and sometimes there's no gravity
in my dream of what should be
guns rise high up out of reach
and peace flies over cross the sea

and all your neighbors in the air you'll meet
swirling round with not a fight to see

so look down far below your feet
miles to the ground, it's just you and me
and we'll try, baby you'll see,
to live life as fully

as a shooting star or horse with wings
or a midnight owl that sings in the trees.

--------
10) Lonely As Me

it feels like it's never enough
the sunlight never shines bright enough
the winter flower whithers and dies
the cold wind whistles and rushes by

still the lone bud is never as lonely as i

balancing plates for dinner on sunday
friend for the hour, be the little savior they need you to be
weighing each moment like the crack of the gavel
to live or to die, wait and see

no moment could ever be as lonely as me

as the clock ticks away at the seconds
waiting for you. waiting for you?
is that what i have come to?

maybe it's this time of year,
this lonely time of lovers.
and maybe as i whither here i'm reminded of the flower.
still no abandoned lover could ever be as lonely as me.

it feels like it's never enough.
the sunlight never shines.

-------
11) Oh Child (Lay Your Hands)

a child will cry out
and patience will dry up
a child

in time a heart he'll break
a tightrope walker sprints the race
in time

oh child.

a sister with nothing left
mother, relieve her debt in heaven above.
and brother, will our prayers you keep
tucked into your bed and sleep sound.
sleep sound.

oh child.

oh god, lay your hands
on the girl child.
lay your hands.

--------
12) Fly Her And Keep Her

i'll give you a kite
fly her but keep her
red and white
pull her string tighter.

she'll slip away
but promise you'll keep her
muted gray, the sky around her turns silver

we watch as love dies.
does only foolish love die?

you're miles below and she's begging you, "keep her"
but take her slow, you're paralyzed by her
for if a kite you can fly her and keep her
but if a bird then mourn for you're going to lose her.

we watch a love dies.
does only foolish love die?
we watch as dreams die.
do only foolish dreams die?
