Decades of Demos

by Sarah Kernochan

This is Kernochan's first pop album since the 70's. After a long hiatus she adopted the MIDI system to realize her arranging dreams and began to compose again, at the rate of a song a year. Her early sense of humor, and love of sexual innuendo, is intact.
Genre: Pop: Beatles-pop

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In the 70's, Sarah Kernochan was called "the female Randy Newman," "Carly Simon with balls," and "willowy and weird." Her piano-based music, while basically pop in arrangement, shows influences ranging from Harry Nilsson to Chopin to Carl Stallings. Her lyrics are frank, sly, and always surprising. The songs created for this album show the freedom she experienced once she left the recording business and its control, as well the necessity of earning a living from music. Meanwhile she became a noted screenwriter (9 and 1/2 Weeks, Impromptu, What Lies Beneath among others), documentary filmmaker ("Marjoe" and "Thoth" both won Academy Awards), and novelist (Dry Hustle, Jane Was Here). Included on this album is her song "The Hairy Bird," which she recorded for a film she wrote and directed called "All I Wanna Do." This song reunited as backup singers her old singing group from Rosemary Hall Class of '65, The Fingernails: Glenn Close, Terry Craigmyle, Sarah Kernochan, Shelley Miller, Subop O’Hara, and Wendy Winslow. Kernochan lives in New York City with husband James Lapine.
