Sarah Llewellyn is a London based composer, orchestrator and music director. She writes, records and produces music and sound for film, theatre, circus, and dance projects worldwide.
In 2004 she founded her own independent creative music company Tonal. This album celebrates Tonal’s 10th anniversary.
The arrangements and original compositions on this album are realised with a dynamic ensemble of players from the UK and France. Combining and exploring the instrumental colours of violin, piano, marimba, percussion, euphonium, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, flute and melodica this album effortlessly plays with style, genre and mood.

In Sarah’s words…
‘10’ has been a labour of love and friendship. It has been a joy to make and is the product of many years of collaboration.

Claire-Rose Barbier is a French singer-song writer making and performing music in several bands. From the 10 piece brassy riff raff ‘Orchestra Pirouette’ to exploring shores of a French/Senegalese dialogue with Kora player Mbemba Diebate. She also leads her own ‘rocky’ Parisian band ‘Les Barbiers’, Claire travels, within people and music.
With ‘10’, Claire’s songs are questioned by meeting another voice. In an open dialogue she and sarah have collaborated over a dynamic 8 year journey and the result is ‘10’.

In Claire’s words...
Words carry moods, fights, lights, frustrations, bliss... A humble task for the song-writer to share the intimate calls to the open ears.
I was blessed, on the road, to cross Sarah and then Karen's way. I like to think that once the songs are written, they’re not yours anymore. Listening to them again after passing through their minds and skills, give them another life. They become the voice of all of us....

Karen Hutt
Karen is a co-founder of Tonal. She writes, arranges and performs. She plays percussion and timpani for many orchestras and ensembles in London and across the country including The BBC symphony orchestra, The Philharmonia, English National Opera, London Philharmonic and the CBSO.

Jour de soleil

Walking in the wind and grasping the sun.
Praising the day for allowing bliss.
Within this moment, Forgiving to stand new.

an extract from La Grognasse

'So, if some changes are needed, I could try suicidal airs and depressive tendancies,
leaving up to you the illusion to reassure me
that your eyes are my guides and your arms my shield,

Gracious, gracious like a dancer
I’ll tip toes on clichés
I’m striding along on prejudices, who knows,
Who knows ?..'

Vagues à l’âme, sweet cynical waltz. A last dance. An embrace, as a mirage of what we where.

New wave. Feminist. Marching anger. Lying to the pendulum. Shouting to the passing hours. Hypocrite. Apology. I won’t be waiting anymore.

How will it be if we were light as the air ? A violin and a flute are chatting while we jump from one branch to another. A ballad through the tops….

My manifesto. Probably the most intimate song I ever wrote. Leaving is so easy. Clearing off to the next land, extending. There is not just one love and one shore, one skin to touch and one wind to breeze…
'I'll travel to beat the norther drums, walk on the frozen rivers, run with the fire foxes, becoming the great stag....'
