Album Notes
Tabula Rasa (literally meaning “clean slate”) is such a fitting title for Sara’s Debut CD

A collection of songs inspired by and drawing on her life experience and her literary knowledge. These songs are a beautiful showcase for her perfect pitch, as well as her mature sensibilities as a musician, songwriter and poet.

Though only songwriting for a few years, Sara has gained a profound insight that is both refreshing and yet mature. Drawing on her experience and training through her early musical years in a full time madrigal choir, and at the same time drawing on her performing traditional American and Irish music hosting open mic nights locally, she has developed a sound and style that is both new and timeless. Her lyrics are inspired to a large degree by her literary experience ( I've known her to read a novel a day). They draw forth on inspiration from many classic novels (see if you can spot references to Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” in these songs).

Her sound and sensibilities are mature beyond her years. I've witnessed her most profound and heart wrenching lyrics fall on deaf young ears. Songs performed without introspection, no matter how sincere, sound superficial. These songs are the fruits of life’s struggles. Sara, though still young, has seen her share and her songs cover the full gamut of emotions, from the joyful declaration to life and dedication to her daughter Magnolia, to the heart wrenching story of seduction and rape in Tabula Rasa.

Her voice is pure and simple, making it so engaging. Her technique is impeccable, yet it is the soul in her voice that is most prominent and engaging. Any singer can produce notes. Notes are not what give music meaning. It’s what you put into them.

“When I first heard Sara, I was still in the parking lot-I wasn't even in the building, yet I already knew what I was hearing was something very special. There are still times during a performance when I just have to stop and listen-to give her all the room she needs. She needs nothing to draw you in other than her ukulele and her enchanting voice. Sometimes the best thing you can do is stay out of her way.”

Though I've only known Sara for a short time, I've seen her potential as a singer, songwriter and performer grow quickly. She is a rare gem indeed, and I feel fortunate to have met her, and fortunate in being able to hear her, let alone perform with her. I can see her great talent.
Paul Mutzek

Many thanks to:
Greg Fiske for sound and video recording in his studio, Hard Drive Recording, photo shooting the pictures for the album, and playing the sax solo in Under Your Wing. Without him offering this opportunity to me I would not have started this project. He was the catalyst for me to take my music seriously.
Derek Levintritt for percussion and drums. His dynamics worked wonderfully with my music and his dedication truly brought me to a new level. Derek had been there since the very beginning and working with him molded my character as a musician and gave a new edge to my sound, opening new doors and perspectives.
Paul Mutzek for playing guitar and bass, mixing and producing, and managing. If it wasn't for Paul keeping me on track and encouraging me I may not have finished this project, as he keeps me focused and thinking positive. Our musical compatibility creates a beautiful sound and it’s nothing short of fate that we create together.
Brandie Lane for mastering the album. She has expert talent in sound engineering and it was a humbling experience for her to offer to master for us. Her work is extremely appreciated.
