Album Notes
Sassafras Stomp is a high-energy, traditional folk music duo with one foot in Maine and one foot in western Montana. Weaving together diverse fiddle traditions, and evocative songwriting with a strong rhythmic sensibility, fiddler Johanna Davis and guitarist Adam Nordell build a rich, dynamic roots sound marked by driving foot percussion and sweet harmony vocals. The duo has made a name for itself as a wide traveling contradance band and performs for festivals and weekly dance series across the US and Canada.

Davis and Nordell’s collaboration began during a month-long musical residency in Basin, Montana, a tiny silver mining town a stone’s throw away from the continental divide. After a debut performance at Seattle’s Northwest Folklife Festival, Sassafras Stomp became a regular contradance band at dances across Montana. In 2010, they relocated to Davis’ home-state of Maine to start an organic vegetable farm and flour mill and participate in the New England folk music community. In 2012 they released a self-titled EP recorded in small cabin on the Maine coast. This album coincided with Sassafras Stomp's featured appearance at Catapult! The National Contradance Showcase in Atlanta, Georgia. The broad exposure following the showcase allowed Davis and Nordell to travel farther afield, and make strong connections to folk music and dance communities in the South East, Midwest, West Coast, and southern Rocky Mountains.

With Cornstalk Fiddle, Sassafras Stomp explores a rich confluence of fiddling traditions and rhythmic styles, celebrating with it's title and content the rural roots of modern folk music. Staying grounded in the past, Sassafras Stomp also ventures into high fidelity with the help of Jim Prendergast's Mill Pond Studio in Portsmouth, NH and Bloomington, IN mastering engineer Grey Larson.
