Album Notes
"Hymn Within" is the product of a long friendship and collaboration between two talented and creative musicians, Scott Hiltzik and Gordon Halligan. The title of this album derives from a composition by Scott Hiltzik of the same name, which is not only one of the featured pieces in this collection but was also arranged by Scott for the Flute Sonic Orchestra, conducted by Gordon and recorded on the Orchestra’s first CD.

The two soloists, Scott on piano and Gordon on flute, communicate easily and comfortably as old friends, and the result is a collection of Scott’s music that is contemplative, peaceful and rewarding to the listener.

Under the Rainbow: feels sad, wistful, and with a ray of hope for the future.
Fifty-One Elephants: playful, opening with a procession which evokes images of marching pachyderms.
The Water is Wide: a calm and broad ballad which can evoke various images and interpretations.
A Touch of Tango: don’t be fooled by the intro, this piece unfolds different elements of the Tango like a dance itself.
Hymn Within: will speak for itself, tender and spiritual.
Solace: From its gentle opening theme, this piece sends a message of comfort and compassion.
December Waiting: suggests a wintery landscape, white and quiet—but Christmas is not far off.
Kyoto Sunrise: evokes exotic sounds of the Orient, and was totally improvised on the spot by Gordon and Scott.
Angel Journey Home: suggests a harmony of time and space along with resolution of all questions.
Short and Sweet: says it all.

Notes by David Shostac, former principal flutist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra
