ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Announcing the release of 'Scott Reiss: Celebration,' a two-CD compilation of the beloved recorder virtuoso's solos and features from Folger Consort recordings from 19986-1995. Scott was a founding member of the Folger Consort, with which he performed from 1976-1999. This recording is the first in a series celebrating Scott by re-issuing collections of his solos and featured performances from Folger Consort and from HESPERUS.

Repertoire on this release ranges from medieval to baroque, including many of Scott's signature pieces such as Benedicamus Domino, Daphne, the Witch's Dance & G.B. Fontana's Sonata Sexta. Fellow performers include Christopher Kendall, Robert Eisenstein, Mark Bleeke, Johana Arnold, Tom Zajac, Ann Monoyios, David Douglass, Wendy Gillespie & Tina Chancey.

SCOTT REISS, founder and Co-director of HESPERUS was a pioneer on the recorder. At home in medieval, Renaissance, and baroque styles, he also possessed a command of Irish and Old-Time music and the blues. A founding member and co-director of the Folger Consort for 21 years, his articles on recorder technique, improvisation, and traditional music were published in Continuo, American Recorder, and Early Music America in the U.S. and Tibia in Germany. A 1998 grant from Earthwatch funded his research on Celtic music in Ireland, forming the basis of his chapter Tradition and Imaginary: Irish Traditional Music and the Celtic Phenomenon in the book Celticisms: from Center to Fringe in Europe (Scarecrow Press, 2003). Scott co-directed the SoundCatcher workshops, teaching musicians the skills of playing by ear. His solo recording are The Banshee’s Wail and Baroque Recorder Concerti. Scott passed away in December 2005.
