Notes from the composer:
A couple of years ago, while producing an album of works composed by David Rimelis, the urge came over me to write a little something for string quartet. This must be due in large part to the delightful experience David and I had working with the members of the Madison String Quartet, the performers on that album. So just to get the urge out of my system, I wrote a short piece. When it was completed, Michael Avagliano, the Quartet’s violist, graciously agreed to check the piece for technical problems. He thought that the best way to do that was to have MSQ play through it. They did so and liked it. Then I wrote another one and they kindly read through it too, and so on until I had finished five pieces.
The light and playful Piece no. 3, “My Quiet Ride with Bill,” was inspired by a recent dream. In it, I was riding in a beautiful old car, perhaps a Hudson Hornet. I turned to my left to discover that William Schuman, one of my childhood idols, was driving. We sped gently down a scenic highway mostly without speaking—although he made one or two offhand, largely inaudible, comments to which I replied, “What?”—otherwise the only sound was the reassuring whir of the car’s tires on the pavement. The structure is simple enough. Frisky ostinati rhythms animate a chord progression in the form of A A' B, playfully punctuated by cadential comments, while each quartet member takes up and passes along a solo melody.
