What if the Our Gang Rascals from the International Silver String Submarine Band were able to get together many years later to record a reunion album?
That is the concept of the new debut CD from the
Semi-Casual Silver String Mezzanine Band.
Titled “Backin’ Out Ass First”

This CD features 12 diverse and witty tracks
Featuring lyrics by Frank Gambino and music by Frank Gambino and Sonny Speed

This is truly a unique CD, full of twists and turns for the listener
Produced to capture the true spirit of the grown up rascal in all of us.

All of the musicians and singers are from the Long Island music scene, including Frank Gambino on guitar, Robert Langley on drums and Sonny Speed on keyboards, bass, mandolin and an assortment of others. Ken“The Rocket”Korb featured on two harmonica tracks and Tommy Pandel playing lead guitar on the instrumental. The 14 vocalists include many of Long Island favorites, such as, Sonny Meadows, Tim Huss, Vincent Crici, Dave Bailey, Denise Romas, Sarah Haddock, Slap Jackson and Jim Baron to name a few.
The musicians playing on this CD jumped at the chance to make this fun album and took time off from their primary bands such as The Defibrillators, Tornado Alley, The Red River Ramblers and Blacklisted and the Banded to help out on this project. And we are so grateful they did.

These songs written by Frank Gambino and produced and arranged by Sonny Speed reflect the diversity of their styles. There’s plenty of comedy like the title track Backin’ Out Ass First, and others such as The Idiot, Don’t Want to Rest on my Laurels, If There is No Such Thing as Free Will, and Pa, You’re Goose Is Cooked. The CD also contains two country songs When Two Become One and You Can Lead a Horse to Water, a love song An Ocean is Small, the philosophical They , and a touching tribute to the people of New Orleans Bourbon Again. The CD has an instrumental titled Frankly It’s Sonny Out and a heart felt Christmas song The Old Guys.

It’s a great collection of musicians and songs. Inspired by the Rascals spirit to put on a show. We hope you enjoy listening to our CD as much as we enjoyed making it.

Review written by Pedro Pereira from the September newsletter of the Long Island Songwriters Showcase:

"Frank’s CD wastes no time letting the listener know you’re in for something a little different.
The first line of the first track is belted out with gusto by soulful guest vocalist Slap Jackson: “I
like a beer for breakfast ‘cause it goes well with my Fruitloops.”
From there, things get even more interesting. In the title track, “Backin’ Out Ass First,” Frank
sings in the introductory verse, “The doctor was ready but the baby was breached/the doctor
said, ‘I don’t see no teeth but look at the size of them gums.’” The song then builds into a
gospel-tinged romp with guest lead vocal by Tim Huss.
There’s plenty of fun in Frank’s CD, and anyone familiar with his music would expect nothing
less, and of course, this being Frank, there is plenty of serious stuff as well. In “They,” with
amazing vocals by Sarah Haddock, Frank gets philosophical. In “If There’s No Such Thing as
Free Will,” he combines humor with philosophy over a playful arrangement that recalls
something out of an old Hollywood musical.
Frank also gets serious once in a while, which is the case in tracks like “Bourbon My Friend,”
a song about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and “An Ocean Is Small,” a song about
“Backin’ Out Ass First” is a must-have for your collection of CDs by Long Island artists. Some
songwriters are funny, others are philosophical, and yet others deadly serious. Frank
manages to be all three, and sometimes all in the same song."
