ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Very Good. In these times, where irony and passivity reign, we must create ways of saying things without actually saying them. Thus: this band is Very Good.

It’s issues like this that art-rock band "Sean Cronin's Very Good" addresses, and consequently questions the importance of; all while creating musical tapestries that create a journey through styles and various states of lucidity. After winning the Galaxie Rising Star award at the 2010 Vancouver Jazz Festival, and recording a brand-new album or two, “Vancouver’s most original band” is ready for the streets, or a bar, or a living room. Sean Cronin is the band’s leader, and his musical life is a testament to the diversity of this project. Cronin was raised on Country, trained in Classical, steeped in Punk Rock, and brought to maturity as a Jazz musician. Similar tales have shaped all of the members of the band, and Very Good is Cronin’s place to conglomerate such stories into song. Some inspirations include Steve Reich, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, The Art Enselmble of Chicago, and the Band. The band’s malleable nature enables it to fit into any circumstance – be it a dance party or a theatre. Whether they’re performing in the dark, singing a capella to announce that “the show will start soon”, or joined by a marching band that emerges from the audience, Very Good is always full of color, spontaneity, and madness.

"Sean Cronin's Very Good?" and "Sean Cronin's Very Good!" are the band's twin album debut. Often recording different sections of songs in different sounding rooms was Cronin's way to represent a sense of motion and environment in the songs. Listening to these albums creates a sense of narrative similar to a film. The songs approach themes of futility, absurdity, and tenderness. The epic centrepiece "Motherland" employs some of the work of Russian absurdist author Daniil Kharms as a springboard into a song that draws from Roma Gypsy music, the Beatles, French Theatre Music, and Noise Music.

Very good, indeed.
