Album Notes
Sea of Monsters is an award winning Chicago based progressive rock group that incorporates diversity of styles and influences, extensive experience and creativity to form a fresh yet unconventional approach to rock and roll music.

This CD far surpasses the conventional misconception of indie bands. The familiar yet highly unique sound is accentuated by the expressive lyrical and musical vision.

Drawing on influences covering wide ranging musical techniques including progressive rock, jazz fusion, blues, heavy metal and 'glam' rock, this band has discovered a singular 'melting pot' formula unlike many of their contemporaries.

With all members writing the lyrics and music and a combined total of over 100 years of playing experience, a number of distinct perspectives and subjects are explored and expressed.

The CD was produced and engineered by Phil Bonnet, arguably the greatest engineer and producer to come out of the Chicago area. Phil produced hundreds of bands including The Smashing Pumpkins and Smoking Popes.

Bassist/Songwriter/Producer Jon Pomplin is a proud endorsing artist for Conquest Sound Cables, GHS Strings, Rocktron Preamps, Morley Pedals, Hot Wire Basses and EbTech Power.

A solid effort overall
Near the Great Lakes area in the northern part of the States lies a geographical area that's less tranquil than its nearby
surroundings and more dangerous than a plugged radio dropped in water. Chicago's Sea of Monster's debut is this body in
discussion, with an engaging blend of metal, blues, and 70s rock. Tracks like the Iron Maiden-esque "X" to the up tempo
"Shadow Boxer" are the better tracks, though each songs has its own personality. A solid effort overall. Omar Perez

The band's trademark being particularly catchy choruses
The Sea of Monsters is an unconventional rock band based in the Chicago area. Their self-titled
seven-track CD is a melting pot of styles ranging from progressive rock to jazz fusion, with
bits of European industrial,Chicago blues, heavy metal, and "glam" rock thrown in for good effect.
With all members writing the lyrics and music, this five-man band boasts a combined total of over
100 years of playing experience. The best track on the album is entitled "Jaded."
It has a punk sensibility reminiscent of early 80s punk-pop crossovers, and the lyrics are
thoughtful and self-reflective. However, all the tracks on this album sport strong lyrics and
vocals, the band's trademark being particularly catchy choruses. Reviewed by Craig Conley

Local Live

This band is one to keep an eye on
Hot Tracks: "Jaded", "Shadow Boxer", "X", "Spiritual Discipline" "Not Guilty"
Sea Of Monsters are a refreshing new rock band that display a wide array of influences on this seven song collection. Weaving together elements of The Beatles,
early Floyd and even some Byrd's the band by far has some of the most solid songwriting I've heard from a local act. "SOM" also display great musicianship
From the heavily Pink Floyd influenced verses of "Spiritual Discipline" the albums finale to the all out party rocking opener "Jaded" the band seems comfortable
and in charge of any style. Guitarists Bill Czerny and John DiNunzio lay down some solid grooving riffs that are sure to get you off your butt
(Jaded & Stay Awake for example). Tasty leads (a rarity anymore), nice melodic sense , cool harmonies and some nice slide work give the band a complete
sound few others can compete with.
The driving "Shadow Boxer" is pushed by drummer Tara Rich's "on top of the beat" drumming that is perfect throughout the album. No overplayed "look at me"
fills that are out of place...just solid grooves and tasty accents to the music. The song opens with a very cool arpeggiated bass run that would leave a lot of bassists
scrambling back to the "woodshead" courtesy of Jon Pomplin who also shares keyboard duties with guitarist Bill Czerny.
This band is one to keep an eye on. Solid songwriting, creative hooks and great musicians who play for the songs not their egos. Vocalist / percussionist Tim Barrett
rounds out the band and his powerful raspy voice fits the songs moods beautifully be they slow and moody or ass-kicking rockers.
The production on the album is second to none. Great drum sound and you couldn't ask for a more perfect mix than this. Well balanced and separated throughout. Sea
Of Monsters is definitely a disc that stays in my "six disc shuffle". They aren't going to "blow you away" from a power standpoint but if you like good ass-kicking rock
and roll and creative songs that are well written then you'd best give this disc a look. Locally they display the best blend of taste, feel and musicianship I've heard in

Great job!!! Look forward to your show in Chicago.

This CD rocks! Another example of excellent indie music at an affordable price. I have sent my copy to our local college radio station so they can play it when school begins again and bought another one for myself. Look forward to the next one. Also - The MP3's on your site, they cook! Thanks for remembering the fans. Mark Illinois

CD Review

We purchased this CD from CD-Baby and what a wonderful experience it has been. Not only did the package arrive within a few days, the music contained was FANtastic. The various cuts showed great musicianship and lyrical grace. Each song was unique, unlike some bands which try to capitalize on a single sound or feel. This is another example of the future of the music industry. Great bands doing it themselves along with vendors such as CD baby who continue to provide an for this music to reach the masses. Integrity, and excellence are the best words to describe this exciting future of music. AMP May, 1999
