Album Notes
The Seattle Mandolin Orchestra presents Rejoice, a new holiday recording for mandolin ensemble.

The bulk of Rejoice’s tracks were recorded in one of the sacred spaces of alternative rock: Studio Litho in Seattle, owned by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, with additional tracks recorded at Seattle’s Vera Project studios. Joseph Pollard White directs the orchestra, while soprano Julie Finch returns as guest soloist.

The orchestra’s versatility is on full display here. Styles range from classical to novelty, and composers cover the spectrum from George Frederick Handel to Irving Berlin. Rejoice also draws on our other talents, featuring one arrangement by White and several by orchestra members. Familiar songs like “Silver Bells” and “Feliz Navidad” appear alongside lesser-known selections like “Ríu Ríu Chíu” and “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella.”

“This project is a dream come true for the orchestra,” said White. “They’ve performed some of this material for many years, and the recording captures what’s unique about those performances.”

A native of New York, Joseph Pollard White completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Washington, where he was a student of Robert Feist. He also holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the Indiana University School of Music. Dr. White has taught at Northern Kentucky University, Christopher Newport University and Pacific Lutheran University. He has worked with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Seattle Chamber Players and Northwest Mahler Festival and served as Music Director of the Rainier Symphony and Seattle Civic Light Opera.

Julie Finch, soprano, performs often with the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra and is the featured artist on the orchestra’s previous CD, Coloratura. Julie has appeared as soloist with Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers, the Bellevue Chamber Singers and Ballet Bellevue. She is a past winner of the Seattle Civic Opera Association competition, the Helen Crowe Snelling competition, the Mary Levine Career Grant Scholarship and the Karl Trump Award.

Founded in 1966, the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra is dedicated to revitalizing America’s mandolin ensemble tradition. Featuring the entire mandolin family of instruments, including mandolin, mandola, mandocello and mandobass, the group performs throughout the Seattle area. Its repertoire encompasses classical, folk and international selections. Mandolin players of all skill levels are welcome to join.
