ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Atlanta songwriter Selene McCarthy has been performing professionally for the last 20 years.

She founded Little Selene and the Blues Machine in the late 80's. Selene evolved out of a strict blues format as she continued to write and perform solo in the early 90's, resulting in her debut CD "Horses and Guitars" in 1996.

Selene mixes folk, blues and country into a well-textured shade of Americana.

She plays acoustic guitar as well as slide. Honest lyrics, unusual arrangements, warm alto.

Selene's second CD Fresh Flowers, reminds me of just that. A summer bouqet brought in from the meadow. Rather than confine her writing to one or two styles of composition, she has allowed herself to express a diverse palette of both subject and genre. McCarthy hooked me a couple of years back with her first release, Horses and Guitars. With this new release, Selene has blossomed and grown as both a writer and performer. Fresh Flowers is a collection of eleven songs sometimes tender, sometimes festive, but always written in an honest and heartfelt manner. She has taken the time to carefully reflect on her memories and emotions before bringing these experiences to her listeners. And the rewards of that patience shine through on each song.
Selene shares the painful remembrance of losing a loved one to Alzheimer's disease, the joy of inspiration from favorite artists and icons of the 20th century, and the playfulness of the fantasy of becoming a millionaire. Plus a fun little romp on the dobro. Fresh Flowers is a collection of songs that at once celebrates the many facets of her talent, yet remain unified with her unmistakable fingerprint as an artist.
If you enjoy the honesty of Joni Mitchell, the lyrical enchantment of Bob Dylan, and the vocal prowess of Natalie Merchant, you'll want to prepare a vase for Selene's Fresh Flowers.
