Space Woman

by Selina Martin & the Vertical Brothers

If Elvis Costello and Jane Siberry got married. with Tom Waits performing the service. Cool with sometimes a subtle ferocious undercurrent. I've heard it's also good music to give birth by.

Album Notes
Space Woman is the first CD I made.
After compiling songs (some very old, some new) for quite a long while I finally sat myself down and did the thing. I was working in Bob Wiseman's studio ('cause I was going out with him at the time, and living there) which was out in the country in southern Ontario and all freakily painted. Teaching myself how to spool 1/2 inch tape through the machine and work the knobs and faders. Good fun. I love old-timey recording.
Bob helped out a lot when I was stuck.
I remember singing "See Through Me" (I think that's the one) through a long cardboard poster tube with a mic at the end. This, in case you want to try it, is a good way to make yourself pass out.
The band was Rob Carson on guitar, Scott Maynard on bass (they're both playing with Rock Plaza Central now), and Joey Bechta on drums.
ACTUALLY, I also remember Joey, during the bridge of "See Through Me" playing like such a madman he fell off his stool. We kept that take.
In any case, I'm proud of this recording. It got great reviews. It's rambunctious and melodic and energetic and slightly mental.
Selina out.

Martin has a way with a hook, casting her spell with wit and passion.
Selina Martin's debut CD is an eclectic mix of rock, pop, jazz, and old time shuffles all given life through Martin's stunning vocals. Space Woman is so expressive, it plays like a contemporary socio-political cabaret. Both lyrically and musically, each song oozes with theatrics. Regardless of mood, Martin has a way with a hook, casting her spell with wit and passion.

The Humm

I could not stop thinking that Jane Siberry had wed Elvis Costello and Tom Waits
