Album Notes
What you are holding is an EP that I never intended to have printed. East Rock was the name I gave to a project where I envisioned releasing one song per month online, throughout the year of 2016. As the cliché goes, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” I didn’t get around to putting out one song per month that year, only these five. However, there was something bigger happening than I recognized.

After releasing Steel Tempered Pride in 2013 and struggling to keep a band together, I decided to abandon the concept of a band and go it alone. By late 2014, I started taking the time to “woodshed,” adhering to a daily regimen comprised of vocal, drum, and guitar practice. During this time, I started toying around with recording at home. I quickly discovered I could simply record all the parts of a song myself, ala Lenny Kravitz. A new door was opening for me.

Flashback for a moment to when I was in college, when I took two semesters of Spanish. I’ll never forget the advice of two different professors, both emphasizing the same principle; the way to truly understand a language is to immerse yourself in it. I believe the same holds true for many disciplines, including recording. When I began tracking the first song, ‘Settle Down,’ I pieced together what little knowledge I had about recording, utilizing what little gear I had, immersing myself in the experience, experimenting and learning along the way. I began to better understand the language.

What the original East Rock EP project represents to me - the “something bigger” I referred to above - is a change in the way I work. Making this EP with the limited gear, limited options, limited space and time, pushed me to make the most out of what I have… appreciating what I can do with limited resources. The key concept being - appreciative of what I have - a concept that has reverberated throughout all aspects of my life.

The catalyst for this remix/remaster project was the information I gleaned after taking an online course for mixing. With a better understanding of recording and mixing concepts, I decided to remix these five songs properly. Nothing was re-recorded, just remixed from the ground up. I am by no means an expert, but I feel I learned enough to warrant a better presentation of these songs that mean so much to me.

Thanks for picking up this record. There are many more to come.
