Black Opal

by San Francisco Guitar Quartet

Evocative music from around the world, played on four classical guitars - from Australia; the brilliant shimmer of Opals, from Cuba; the fury of a hailstorm, and from Spain; the passion of the Fandango.

Album Notes
The San Francisco Guitar Quartet are David Dueñas, Patrick Francis, Christopher Hanford, and Mark Simons - four Bay Area guitarists presenting an expansive and vibrant repertoire of newly composed works as well as time-tested classics. Exploring the many and varied possibilities of four guitars playing together, an SFGQ program is a veritable guitar lover’s Wonderland, offering at once an abundant, engaging, and delightfully eclectic listening experience. From the infectious rhythms of Brazil to the whirling dances of the Balkans, from the passion of the tango to the hypnotic textures of minimalism, the SFGQ manifests a modern yet all-embracing approach to chamber music for classical guitar - with deference to the guitar's deep roots in both the folk and classical traditions. Through their national and international touring, ground-breaking recordings, and featured performances at major guitar festivals, the SFGQ has established itself as an enduring presence in the classical guitar world. If you like the guitar, you will love the SFGQ's recording, "Black Opal" - what CDbaby called "one of the best we've ever heard." Check out the quartet's CD "Compadres" at

I loved it from the first note. A gamble that paid off beautifully!
I came to CD Baby to buy a disc of another friend's group, and paused on this Editor's Pick. I had some extra $$ in my paypal account, so what the hell. I loved it right from the first note, and there's not a clunker to be found (well, maybe the Brower -- the first piece by him I care less for --but only perhaps because it's almost radically different in style from everything else). I'm a composer, and was curious to hear the Bogdanovic. I now see why he's becoming a staple among guitarists. A great variety of moods and styles, all played beautifully, with conviction and a great sense of balance both on the parts of the musicians and the engineer. I'm going to get another copy or two to give away as Christmas gifts.

As if one virtuosic classical guitarist were no longer enough to dazzle the mind and ears, here are four of them in rich, textured and colorful arrangements. Interacting and weaving these boggling works as one unit, carefully interlocked and interwoven as if to speak from one instrument with 24 strings, all four of these accomplished guitarists speak with meticulous technique and absolute clarity. Covering music from Australia to Cuba to Spain, this album shimmers with more brilliance than a morning's first dart of sunlight over the water.

Such a unique blend of musical genres, all so skillfully performed!
I am so glad I rather stumbled across this CD while doing some surfing and research. WOW! You can feel their swell sound way down into your toes!! It's nice to know true musicianship is alive and well.
