Album Notes
New music in the category of vocal jazz is rare, with the majority of vocalists favoring the tried and true, if meritorious, territory of standards. In this project vocalist/pianist/songwriter Sharman Duran offers both original and standard jazz, the former category represented by a number of fresh, well-crafted gems. For several of these she can claim sole authorship: "Gentle Soul", paean to the often overlooked quiet supports among us; the devotional "Mystery Dispell'd", a duet with the inspirational tenor sax of Melecio Magdaluyo; the wordless and rambunctious "Adowa", featuring drummer Bill Belasco. There are collaborations also: "Future Echo", child poet Mattie J.T. Stepanek's poignant examination of childhood's end set to Duran's spare yet playful melody; "My Heart In A Song", Italian jazz pianist Enrico Pieranunzi's haunting and harmonically challenging ballad combined with Duran's uplifting lyric of redemption. Two seldom heard pieces are also included: "In Your Own Way", set to Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way", has lyrics by Paul H. Smith, written as a tribute to his wife and musical partner, percussionist Sheila Smith, and features him on bass; and, with its no-nonsense appraisal of what really matters, "The Wonder Of Life", co-written by Paul and Sheila Smith and originally intended for Stevie Wonder, with whom Sheila was associated. Two examples of the Great American Songbook, "Like Someone In Love" and "Tenderly", the latter with Duran's own idiosyncratic re-harmonization, are rendered straight ahead-style. And lastly, "Love Reborn", George Duke and Flora Purim's lush picture of love's re-kindling. Duran is supported by a stellar ensemble, the aforementioned bassist Paul H. Smith, drummer Bill Belasco and saxophonist/flautist Melecio Magdaluyo. *NOTE: The song order on the CD jacket is not correct.

A Beautiful Album
Whether her singing voice or pianism, whether her skill as a composer and lyricist, Sharman Duran is always on the money. Listen to her swing on the standard piece "Like Someone In Love" and then gently transition into "Mystery Dispell'd" a dreamy ballad and original composition. I particularly like "Gentle Soul" and her lyric to Enrico Pieranunzi's great tune "My Heart In A Song." This album makes me feel good and I highly recommend it.
