ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Thomas Smith first encountered the poetry that comprises Three Songs from The Lamp and the Bell by Edna St. Vincent Millay when he was a composer resident at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York in 2009. The Lamp and the Bell was a fully staged theatrical production conceived, written and performed by Millay when she was a student at Vassar in the 1920s. Composed in 2013, these three short pieces illustrate Millay’s elegant, but concise style.

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a Brazilian composer who played the cello professionally and by most accounts, was a fairly accomplished amateur guitarist. His familiarity with the instrument and his love of Brazilian folk music led him to compose many works for the guitar, both solo and in chamber music settings. Composed in 1940, the three Preludes presented here are part of the “famous five” that are now considered standard repertoire.

Ernesto Cordero was born in New York in 1946 and raised in Puerto Rico. His large, rich catalogue of works is distinguished by its Caribbean flavor. Since 1971 he has taught composition and guitar in the music department of the University of Puerto Rico. In addition to his activities as composer, performer and teacher, Ernesto Cordero, was music director since 1980 to 1997 of the International Guitar Festival of Puerto Rico. His Four Works for Voice & Guitar were written between 1973 and 1976.

David Hahn composes diverse styles of music ranging from the experimental sounds of a quartet of electronically processed guitars to chamber music featuring traditional instruments and voices.

About Ostraka the composer writes:

Ostraka were shards of broken pottery, which in the seventh and sixth century were often used to write on. We derive our modern word “ostracize” from the Greek ostrakon, shell, or potsherd. This ancient practice played out when the citizens gathered and wrote the names of men they deemed dangerous to the state on potsherds or tiles. The man whose name turned up often enough was sent away, out of the city.
Experiencing poetic fragments of a past civilization creates an experience filled with promise. While we do not have the whole poem, fragments promise something that our minds must fill in. We are shown a glimpse, a picture of what can only be conjecturally completed.

Andrew York is one of today’s renowned composers for classical guitar and a performer of international stature. His compositions blend the styles of ancient eras with modern musical directions, creating music that is at once vital, multi-leveled and accessible. Andrew received a GRAMMY as a member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet during his sixteen years with the cutting-edge ensemble. Woven Harmony was written in 2006 for the husband and wife collaboration of fiber artist Rebecca Bluestone and classical guitarist Robert Bluestone. Rest in peace, Robert.

Dynamic Duo!
An excellent recording of my OSTRAKA, a 16-movementsong cycle based on fragments from Archaic Greek poetry (starting at track 11). Sharon and Tom premiered this piece in Philadelphia at the Fringe Festival and I am happy they chose to record it for this CD. They are also super nice people!

Very lovely pairing of voice with guitar music and poetry
The CD is very beautifully done. The voice and the guitar pair very well. I am listening to it now with my office manager who also happens to be a musician. She plays the clarinet and enjoys classical music. I like that they also put music with poems!
