Album Notes
hi i'm steph hayes. i am a gutter poet. i love words. i'm the singer and songwriter of The Good Problems. we are an "urban folk" band. i made up that genre 'cause we needed one that serves our specific purpose. also, i don't know that anyone else claims to be an "urban folk" band and so maybe we are the only one. and that is somethin'.

it means that we play folk songs inspired by city livin. lots stories involving trash n grime and crime. hookers and miscreants. great culture and great aspirations, big tall buildings and big tall expectations, ridin' trains with thousands of people from everywhere different and not sayin' a word to anybody. it means fiddles and shuffles mixed up with angry soundin' amps and pretty harmonies that hang over my growling. it means brotherly love and Dirty Beauty.

see how i dropped that in...

Dirty Beauty is our new record that came out on Saturday, September 30th at the World Cafe Live here in Philadelphia, our "urban" catalyst. on it are 14 trax of truth, whether it's nice or not.

here's the line-up:

my brother, matt hayes plays a vicious lead guitar. bobby wolter plays the drums so tastefully that everyones talkin about him. especially other drummers. my evil twin, chris schutz, a bad ass songwriter in his own band the tourists, plays the jazzirockitude bass and harmonizes with me and mia johnson(who also gots her own crew, the mia johnson band). add dave "the fiddle" gregorio and you got manhattan transfer vocals, man! well, csn&y? well, cool harmonies. thats definate. erin ryan was the last member to join. she plays the cello, among other things, and thusly causes the fact that we have a string duet.

we made our record at cheeks studio in upper darby, pa.

we are on permanent records.

Good Stuff!
This cd is refreshing...ah!

One of the ten best of the year!
Don't file this CD under folk or singer-songwriter. Dirty Beauty straddles so many genres it defies description. Rock. Punk. Country. Blues. Urban folk. Call it what you want, this is a record that makes you think and feel. Loud and angry, quiet and introspective, playful and reckless all at once, it is a record of passionate emotions and life reflections from a master story-teller who is wise beyond her years. Steph Hayes can make you feel emotions you didn't even know you had on many, many levels: her honest lyrics, the easy, clever way she turns a phrase, her raw yet beautiful vocals, her amazing arrangements and often choir-like harmonies, and the music itself (given wings by a talented string section) all combine to make Dirty Beauty a thinking person's journey through the human condition, and as such requires more than one listen to truly appreciate its depth and beauty. Having said that, it also delivers some pure & simple rock n' roll, too! BUY IT!

diamond in the rough
The title of this CD is perfect. The writing is thoughtful and the lyrics remind us that their is sympathy for the sinful and consequences for those who are compassionate. Steph Hayes reminds me of the goddess Kali- destroying what is familiar so that something new can sprout from the rawness.

Bella Van Hughes

Great lyrics, great stories, interesting new sound.
