Reviews Devil & the Angel

penguin eggs the folk, roots and world magazine
By Michael Dunn May 2017

Shawn Lidster’s sound travels great distances on Devil & The Angel, his first album in six years, from the kitchen party toe-tapping of the Canadian East Coast to a back-of-beyond version of Australian bluegrass, an amalgam of Dixie death march and cotton-field Delta blues.

Lidster’s timbre is youthful and homespun, and like so many campfire troubadours, doesn’t as much jump out from the mix as it does settle in and fit with his band. He experiments with beats here and there, adding a steady drum machine loop to the chiming piano on the ambient ballad Mark On Me, with it’s spacey guitar effects later emboldened by the tasteful addition of a kick drum and tambourine played in concert on the downbeat, which raises the arrangement through its stark minimalism.
Devil & The Angel lifts the pace with its faith healer banjo blues, accented by a bluegrass disco beat and reedy harmonica. Only a jug and jaw harp could bring the arrangement closer to the South.

Lidster checks off a lot of roots and folk boxes on Devil & The Angel, with subtle Americana guitars filling space next to acoustic fingerpicked sensitivity, though Lidster performs more admirably when his lyrical content is strongest, as on Ned Kelly, ultimately proving that Lidster’s greatest lyrical strength might come in more narrative songwriting

Grace Scott Country Music Capital News December 2016 Vol 41
This is a raw, earthy offering with musicianship and production that suits the nature of the songs.
Highlights include Scratches, The Tailwind and Alive, but there are plenty of gems on this album.

Bernard Zuel - Sydney Morning Herald 0ct 7, 2016
Halfway between easy pop – with – country – touches, which characterises those who grew up loving the 70’s west coasters such as Jackson Browne, and grittier country-with Dylan rock touches, which characterises the generation inspired by John Prine, Shawn Lidster looks to cover as much ground between those points on this album.

Denise Torenbeek, Country Update Sept 1 2016

“Devil & the Angel” is a finely wrought selection of tasty originals sent express to the senses via intriguing and very versatile vocal, veering from twang, to gritty blues to gossamer tenor delivery. This Cd demands half a dozen listens to focus on each of its exceptional aspects individually.

No Depression Magazine Rob Dickens July 22 , 2016.

“The Album covers say’s a lot.” Devil & The Angel is crammed with vibrant and colorful tales, the rolling ‘The Tailwind’, the tip-toe-ing of ‘Alive’ and the ambitious urgency of ‘Ned Kelly’ (Australia’s most famous bushranger) are but three highlights.

Stag & Hunter, Newcastle Sept 4 2006 Posted 5 September 2016 by Adz Carter
Shawn Lidster was not only an incredible storyteller, but a very passionate musician as well, proven with stories about how he made it from Canada to Australia, his set of originals were performed it brilliantly, with Jack Johnson style guitar, John Mayer style vocals, and James Taylor style lyrics. The closing number, did feel like a voodoo spell had been cast over the crowd, as the song, and indeed the entire set, was intensely mystifying.

Track 1,The Tailwind was a Semi Finalist in 2016 Unsigned Only in Nashville under both Folk Singer/Songwriter and Americana.

Tracks: “The Tailwind, Alive and Ned Kelly,” have already been receiving airplay on some 55 plus community radio stations across Australia.

Three songs “Ghost, Sorry and Devil & the Angel” have already made the cut into a new TV show in Canada called “Bucky” created by Kenneth J Harvey, which has aired on NTV.

“In the Wind” has been featured in a Animation video by producer Julian Grant( Robo Cop) at the Art All Night International Film Festival in Trenton NJ, USA. Also to be featured at the Kinosommer Villach Open Air Film Festival in Austria.

“Mark on Me” made top 5 in Songs Alive Song Australia Contest under singer/songwriter category.

Shawn is ranked #1 under Folk/Acoustic/Roots for his Region on Reverbnation
