ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Breezes of Paradise is designed to serve as an educational resource as well as to present traditional nashids in an authentic and enjoyable format.

The nashids include an easily memorisable chorus sung between verses. A booklet is available (for separate purchase) with fully voweled Arabic so that a reader with the most basic of Arabic reading skills can follow along or sing independently of the recordings. The nashids are sung clearly by a master of the inshad and Qur’an recitation, including the canonical recitations (qira’at) of the Qur’an: Sheikh Salah al-Kurdi. His voice is amazingly strong and clear and he is the son of the late spiritual guide Sheikh Muhammad Sa’id al-Kurdi.

To meet both purposes, the tracks are sung both with and without a fabulous hand-drum (daff) rhythm. The rhythm is arranged by Sheikh Salah himself.

The lyrics are mostly classical poems and were written largely by figures known for their saintly lives. Most of these poems were written in centuries past and have profound meanings which work like an invocation (dhikr). In a number of ways, they offer a window into a receding traditional society and way of life. Often being a form of inspired language, they can be contemplated and mined for a lifetime without being depleted.

Each melody is composed in one of the classical modes (maqamat; sing. maqam). They offer a richness of sound and expression which cannot be captured in a single mode or musical scale. The recordings are intended to serve as training wheels which may be discarded once the words and melodies are learned.
