Album Notes
Shelly Ravid! Remember that name, soon to be a major sensation throughout the reggae music community, a bright star in the making. She is half Israeli, half Swedish and spent her growing years between Israel and Sweden in a commune, which inspired her keen sense of social responsibility which comes pouring out in her music. Shelly is no stranger to reggae music though, her biggest influences came from artists such as the Skatalites, Horace Andy, Morgan Heritage, Tanya Stephens and Queen Ifrica to name a few. Her songwriting have also been influenced by Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill and Ray Charles.
A true millennial, Shelly Ravid brings a unique complexity to her music. It combines a blend of the past, present and future, creating this new evolutionary blend of reggae music that now transcends age, race and gender. Her lyrics are politically thought provoking, hard-hitting and fun.
With her Middle Eastern and Scandinavian roots you might expect music that did not have that authentic reggae vibe but you are so wrong. This diversity has molded and strengthened her passion for the music thus giving her a flair not often heard.
Shelly has been auditioning since the age of twelve. She started her first band at 14 years old touring Sweden playing Ska, among all things, playing in bars and clubs whilst not revealing her age... a true hustler!
Never losing her nomadic spirit, she moved to London and her passion for music especially, reggae music, did not diminish. Instead, she became even more driven with her band playing all over London. She worked on a project with Alberto Blackwood (Sly& Robbie), teamed up with Indica Dubs (with one released getting airplay on local BBC Radio) and went on a tour through Italy, France and Belgium as well as opened for the criticcaly acclaimed Channel one Sound System. She also did an onstage guest appearance with legendary Earl Sixteen at the One Love Festival in 2015 and played with her own band in 2017.
Shelly will leave quite an impact on the reggae and overall music community. Make no mistake, her music will certainly help to shape the political and social landscapes. Her lyrics are awe inspiring, empowering, iconic if you will!
