ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
“Legacy "– My late husband, Sherwood Ball, always wanted to leave a Legacy. I honor his wishes and so named this album "Legacy" – Featuring Sherwood Ball with the Les Hooper Band.

Sherwood has departed us but, he still lives in the hearts of all of those who knew and loved him. The premature death of an artist is an unspeakable calamity. There are no words to describe the loss of a loved one. Today, we celebrate Sherwood and his great “Legacy”.

Les Hooper and Sherwood began creating & producing this album several years ago. Kudos go to Les for his incredible help and support during this time of loss to help me put the pieces back together to produce this beautiful album.

Sherwood was more than an incredible person. To his peers in the music business, he was a multi-talented artist & creative force whose diverse artistic talents had no bounds. With his constant & passionately driven spirit and soul, Sherwood was way ahead of his time when it came to every aspect of creativity in the music business. He was the kind of person who never accepted less than perfection in everything he did and he managed to do everything superbly well with the greatest of ease. He was always the "go-to person" when you wanted to achieve something of the highest caliber for your musical project.

Sherwood’s vocal style is unusually evolved, natural, honest & distinct while characterized by a raw, beautiful & unique sound unlike any other. His vocal skills, along with his personal work ethic, were highly respected and regarded throughout the entire ‘inner circle" of professionals in the music industry in Los Angeles. Sherwood also toured and played lead guitar and/or vocals with Three Dog Night, Etta James, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, Stephen Stills, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Jay Graydon Allstars, Steve Porcaro, Biff Baby and the Allstars including guitar greats such as Albert Lee, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Morris, Steve Lukather, Rodney Crowell and more.

Historically, Sherwood came from a long line of creative and artistic geniuses. It was clear that making music was in his DNA. He was the first born of the late, great Ernie Ball who is known worldwide, initially, for his inventive creation of guitar strings which eventually was followed by his extraordinary line of basses, guitars, and Music Man amplifiers which are endorsed by many legendary pro-players throughout the music industry. In addition, Sherwood’s great grandfather, Ernest Roland Ball, wrote the music for the classic songs, "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "Mother Machree” "Saloon" “A little Bit of Heaven” “Let the Rest Of The World Go By” “Will You Love Me in December As You Do in May?” and so many more.

Sherwood was also inspired by his great grandfather so there is a set of songs he sang which will be forth coming in our next album honoring him. The last song on this album is "Irish Eyes," with a beautiful piece which Les Hooper created from his AFRIKKA album called “Mosquito Dance”.

I could not have finished this album without the tireless and dedicated help of Les Hooper and Andy Waterman who added their brilliant expertise to the remix and Master. Les’s arrangement of this entire album is truly beautiful.

The most beautiful song is “Nature Boy” written by Eden Ahbez. We have been granted very special permission by the owner of “Nature Boy”, Mrs. Geraldine Janowiak and her daughter Debra Guess, to release this version of this classic song. It is truly a gift to us and honor’s my late husband’s wishes to sing this epic song in this way.

In the end, we were short two songs for this album so, Les graciously offered to include one song Sherwood sang on his album from "Out of the Woods" of "Willow Weep For Me." We ended the album with "Irish Eyes."

This is truly a "one-of-a-kind" great album that represents the artist, Sherwood Ball, at his finest vocal moments and includes an original song from his days with his own band, Gumbo, featuring renown jazz trumpet artist, Rick Braun, on the original song "Stranger In My House."

This album is eclectic in that it covers so many genres including Blues, Soulful Jazz, Pop, R&B, Funk, Big Band and "C'est La Vie Mon Ami," [This song was originally a haunting movie instrumental set composed by Les. Lyrics co-written by Sherwood and me], plus the engaging "Chinatown Blues" [lyrics & music by Les], and "Dance the Night Away" [lyrics by Sherwood and me] with the music composed by Jon Gilutin and Sherwood.

Exactly two years ago today as I finishing writing this, Sherwood sent himself a note to his memoirs. It says more about Sherwood than I could ever write:

“The people who formed my musical sensibilities, who invested so much, imparting their experience and musical intelligence are all gone now. My grandfather, Pop, wonderful singer/entertainer/music publisher, my grandmother, Deedie, brilliant arranger, accompanist, jazz pianist, my aunt Roberta, consummate entertainer/singer, my mother, Nova, soulful singer from the heart who emanated love not just on stage but throughout her life and my father, Ernie (Sherwood real name), extremely gifted arranger, guitarist, steel guitarist, teacher, and graphic artist. Each of them applied their unique brush strokes to the painting known as me. I am a living painting. I miss them all. Their sense of humor, the magic they created with their music and songwriting. Their playfulness. their incredible communication with audiences. The canvas they painted on was me. This canvas has a knowingness of lifetimes of songwriting, entertaining, singing, and communicating with audiences. I see more who I am and how I affect the world around me just by Being me, the painting. And how I create and am responsible for the world around me.
I put it there. I am responsible for what I create verbally, musically and my actions. To know and to be who I am as a unique person. One who sets a good example just by my Beingness alone.” Sherwood Ball

In closing, there are no words to describe the sudden and unexpected loss of your best friend, your partner, your everything. Sherwood was the most kind, sincere, funny, generous & creative person I have ever known.

So, with a tremendous amount of love & dedication that has gone into the making of this album, I present this artistic piece of work to you now. As Sherwood would say when he really liked a song… “Tasty!”

We will treasure and love you for eternity Sherwood. Your Legacy lives on! May you Dance the Night Away and onto your next adventure!
With So Much Love,
Vicki

Quotes:
“Sherwood is one of the best singers to hit Los Angeles since Michael McDonald.”
Bonnie Raitt – Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter

“Sherwood is so soulful he’s black on the inside.”
Isaac Hayes – Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter

“When I think about Sherwood I can't help but feel that he was my own brother. We were so much alike and we shared so many great times both on and off the stage. He was such an amazing talent and had such a kind soul. I loved him and I miss him!”
Rick Braun – Smooth Jazz Trumpeter, Multi-Instrumentalist and Record Producer, Soul Train Music Award for Best Contemporary Jazz- Trumpet Player with Sherwood in his band “Gumbo”

“Many times over the years I had told Sherwood he is on a very short list of the best singers of all time! If Stevie Wonder had heard Sherwood sing, Stevie would agree! Sherwood could sing in any style and only a handful of white singers can sing R&B and make it funky and totally believable! Sherwood was also a very good guitarist! Sherwood was like a brother to me! A very generous person with a heart of gold! In 1994 and 1996 I put together a band to tour Japan, Sweden, and Norway. Sherwood was surely a key factor as to the band as a guitarist and singer! So many fond memories of our time together.”
Jay Graydon – Songwriter, recording artist, studio guitarist, singer, producer, arranger, and recording engineer. Winner of two Grammy Awards and twelve Grammy Nominations.

“This album came about after many years of promises Sherwood and I made to someday do an album together. We had great music chemistry and put together this very eclectic series of songs that cover many genres. It was a labor of love for the both of us and the mutual respect made the process all the more thrilling. After Sherwood’s passing in late 2015 Vicki and I transformed this CD into a tribute to one of the great talents of our industry. It’s very bittersweet mixing these tunes in the studio with Andy Waterman, all time favorite sonic wizards! This album has R&B, Funk, Jazz, big band, sultry, haunting, originals and standards from all corners of the music business. My hat goes off to Sherwood’s widow, Vicki Norton who has kept this project alive. Sit back and enjoy the man of many talents as well as of the best friend anyone could have… generous, kind, funny and musical.”
Les Hooper - Composer and Arranger – Winner of an Emmy and Clio, 7 Grammy Nominations

Tracks:

1. Dance the Night Away
Songwriters: Sherwood Ball and Jon Gilutin (BMI)
Lyrics: Sherwood Ball and Vicki Norton (BMI)
Sherwood wanted a 13th song to this album and asked me my opinion on a few tunes from many years ago that had no lyrics. As soon as Sherwood played this music, I was so excited I jumped up and started dancing! We decided on the title, Dance the Night Away and began writing. Sherwood recorded it and took it to Les. Les loved it as much as us, and we all agreed it should be the #1 song on the album. Unforgettable and a great dance tune!

2. I Want a Little Girl
Songwriters: Billy Moll, Murray Mencher
Shapiro Bernstein & Co. Inc.
This song was originally recorded by the Great Ray Charles with his standard 7 piece band. This is one of Sherwood’s favorite songs on the album and told me this was the best singing he had ever done. It truly is!

3. C'est la Vie Mon Ami
Songwriter: Les Hooper ~ Hooper Publishing (BMI)
Lyrics: Sherwood Ball and Vicki Norton (BMI)
This song was originally a haunting movie instrumental set to lyrics by Vicki and Sherwood. Sung beautifully by Sherwood.

4. Chinatown Blues
Songwriter: Les Hooper ~ Hooper Publishing (BMI)
East Coast Jazz Blues portrays a broken heart drowning his sorrows in Chinatown. An intro and ending in a dramatic Asian scene followed by a Shakahachi like flute. Solo by Bruce Babad finishes out the story.

5. Nature Boy
Songwriter: Eden Ahbez (ASCAP)
A favorite classic originally recorded by Nat King Cole. A Wonderful rendition by Sherwood with a great woodwind section. A very special thanks to Geraldine Janowiak and her daughter Debra Guess to allow us to add additional words written by Sherwood and Vicki to this classic song.

6. Summertime
Songwriters: Du Bose Heyward, George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin (ASCAP)
This is Les’s second arrangement of this great standard, and another display of Sherwood’s versatility! Jeff Bunnell is the soloist.

7. Stranger in My House
Songwriters: Sherwood Ball and Garret Adkins. Arrangement by Les Hooper.
This is an off the wall background of a very difficult horn, which this great band just walked through! This is yet another piece of diversity which Sherwood shows beautifully.

8. Lookin Back
Songwriter: Les Hooper ~ Hooper Publishing
Slow, backbeat song about a man who’s on the later part of his life, yet still has a song left to sing. Allen Hinds lends the guitar solo.

9. My Foolish Heart
Songwriters: Ned Washington, Victor Young (ASCAP)
A beautiful ballad with an impeccable interpretation by Sherwood and masterfully tenor sax work by a great musician, Bob Shepard.

10. Show Me The Magic
Songwriters: Jon Gilutin, Sherwood Ball, and Jay Graydon
Lyrics: Jon Gilutin, Sherwood Ball, Jay Graydon and Janea Chadwick
Another rousing song by Sherwood, Jon Gilutin and Jay Graydon with a great guitar solo by Jay Graydon. This is another previously recorded piece.

11. Willow Weep for Me
Songwriter: Ann Ronnell (ASCAP)
From the Les Hooper album “Out of the Woods"

This version of Willow Weep was released 4 years ago on Les’s album Out of the Woods. It is well worth a second release.

12. Up From the Skies
Songwriter: Jimi Hendrix (ASCAP)
Sherwood wanted to do a more Jazzy version of the classic Jimi Hendrix song. Great brush work by Dave Hooper and flute solo by Steve Kujalah. Sherwood Ball - co-arranger with Les Hooper.

13. Irish Eyes
Songwriters: Ernest Ball, (ASCAP) Chaucy Olcott and George Graff

This song came together quite by accident. Les had this piece from his AFRIKKA album called Mosquito Dance and Sherwood, while listening, began singing Irish Eyes to it. It gave birth to this very unique version on the classic Irish song which the music was written by Sherwood’s great grandfather Ernest Ball. Les and I decided to add this song to the album as a prelude to the next and final album sung by Sherwood. The songs from the next album will be from his great grandfather Ernest R. Ball as a tribute to his legacy. Sherwood Ball - co-arranger with Les Hooper.

Simply beautiful
This is one album I enjoy hearing over and over again. The music is very upbeat and I find myself feeling better after having listened to it. The arrangements of Les Hooper are absolutely first class and Sherwood is just fantastic! I love his phrasing and it is so easy to understand the words to each song, almost a lost art in my opinion. Dance the Night Away is an example of a very upbeat tune that makes you feeling better after you finish listening to it. I Want a Little Girl is so nice! I love the vocals and the arrangement has the big-band feel of yesteryear but with a modern soulful twist.

My two favorites are the classic standards Nature Boy and Summertime. The intro to Nature Boy is so, so beautiful and the vocals stunning. I love the bass which punctuates the tune with the prefect notes in just the right places. I love the arrangement of the classic standard Summertime – the unison of the bass with Sherwood’s voice is sublime!

This album is a true labor of love of beautiful music. It's a great legacy.

OK— Just finished- here’s my “review”:

“I just spent a truly lovely morning listening to Sherwood Ball’s Legacy Album. Since the last cut is an exhilarating version of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” my first response is “‘Twas truly glorious!”
The album is really a work of love and remembrance- it displays Sherwood’s wonderful talent in a myriad of styles and emotions—an eclectic compilation showcasing one of the finest sets of chops in the business. Each cut brings you new nuances- and further admiration.
The fact that Sherwood was also a pretty magnificent being shines through note after note. I flat out loved it.
And I also loved him...”

Legacy
Great album by Sherwood Ball with help of the Les Hooper band and his wife Vicki Norton. This album is showcased as a jazz type music, but it's got Sherwood's fingerprints all over it. Having known Sherwood and followed his music as a soloist and with his stint with Jay Graydon and the All-stars brings back bittersweet memories. His Soul, Kindness and always willing to help others reflects in his music on this album. The Harmonies and Lyrics are perfect and reflect Sherwood's style. I am honored to have known sherwood in person and his graceful heart. Do yourself a favor. Get this album. You will not be disappointed.

I was totally knocked out just after I started to listen to the album!
I do believe that Sherwood Ball was one of the most versatile singer songwriters. From Melodic cutting edge rock to Big Band Jazz, he had remarkable performances over the decades. Personally I like his blue-eyed soul type works, one of which you can feel it by listening to his self-cover version of “Show Me The Magic” (originally appeared on the album entitled “Airplay For The Planet” by Jay Graydon. I was lucky enough to see his live performance with Jay Graydon All Stars) of this soulful masterpiece mid 90’s here in Japan, “Dance the Night Away”, the opener of the album is another proof of his musical sophistication. I was totally knocked out just after I started to listen to the album. “Legacy” is one of the must-have albums for true music lovers. Takeshi Ito

Sherwood's Legacy
My husband and I purchased this amazing CD about a week ago. We shut out the world, turned on the surround sound, and lost ourselves in the music from start to finish. What an amazing artist. We wish we had had the opportunity to meet the man personally, as we have read so many amazing things about him. His passion shows in every single song, we were so impressed. It only left us wanting more. We loved being able to read the album insert enclosed. And have since researched to learn as much as we could about the artist and his life. I am so thankful we purchased and had the opportunity of enjoying Sherwood Balls music. We were most impressed with the lyrics written by Sherwood and his wife Vicki. Thank you to everyone who made it possible for us to hear and enjoy this wonderful music!
