Eccentric Swing Set was created entirely by Sherwood Gainer’s mind, and Logic Pro X software.

Notes on the tracks:

Jumpin’ - Sometimes when I sleep in on the weekend, I’ll half consciously put a few notes together in my mind. If I’m lucky, something might come together that is a start worth pursuing. Then I race to the computer to recreate what is in my mind before I forget. Jumpin’ is one of the best tunes that started this way.

Changeup - This is the first of several too cool blues numbers. Often when I hear this style, I think of the bizarre red-room dream sequences from Lynch’s Twin Peaks series. Next stop: rocket science.

Cooler With a Chance - I had at the idea of switching the parts an instrument was playing in the middle of a musical phrase, so that they would “finish each other’s sentences”, if you will. Doubling the vibes and bass created a low end full of life and motion. I think it works.

As You Were - Once, while working on a rock guitar solo, I stumbled on a musical phrase that sounded good, but wasn’t made for that genre. I saved it for later. Those notes became the baseline for As You Were.

Flourishing - Sometimes I try to make “serious” music— something almost approaching classical” music. I think I succeed, and play it for someone, and invariably, it is declared Jazz. I have my doubts. You be the judge.

Familiar Stranger - Another of the too cool pieces. This may be the best.

Pentadactyl - From the laboratory: Blues in 5/4 time. Because why not?

Clockwork - Another recipe from the lab. Clocks generally display time in 12 hour increments. Music (western music generally, anyway); has 12 notes in an octave. Coincidence? Combine several plucked metallic, or mechanical sounds in strange, oddly timed patterns. Mix in a circle of fifths. Repeat. Best served chaotically to the musically curious.

Autumnal - This is far and away my favorite of the sleeping-in-on-the-weekend,-musical-inspiration-compositions. It may not really swing so much, but it takes you to interesting places. When I share this with serious musicians, and they don’t laugh (none have yet) , I feel legitimate.

Three Ten Between Us - From the Lab. Were you wondering why that arpeggio sounds a but unusual? Can you guess? Tenth notes! As in notes one-tenth of a measure in length, so that five would fit into two beats of a regular 4/4 time bar. I’m sure I cannot possibly be the first to try them, but I find nothing in a quick Google search. Friends who work at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office say nothing is new — but maybe they never researched tenth notes. I think their use in this chart makes for a sound that works well. It fits in the piece without distracting, yet makes the listener think, ”what is that?"

Partial Solution - Another attempt at “serious” music. The almost hypnotic, subtly shifting note patterns color and play off the main theme.

Deconstructing Bo - Those who know diddly about “the beat”, will appreciate this musical disassembly of the elements that form the classic and ubiquitous rhythm.

In a Nutshell. A frantically paced ditty that recalls soundtracks to vintage monochromatic Hollywood comedies. Zany, screwball, and the like.

Sticks - A casual groove piece with a double shot of percussion

Fits and Starts. After a cautious and disjointed beginning, confidence and the horn section grow to a strong finish.

Organic Four. A quartet of distinctive organ sounds express varied styles improvising over this simple tune. “B3”, “It’s a hit!” Fun for all ages.

Big Shoes. To bebop or not to bebop. Here is the answer.

The Automat - This tune originally appeared in a previous and best forgotten album. The instruments in this version (2019) are more in keeping with traditional jazz, yet still swing without the funky clav and synthesizers. Is anyone else old enough to remember the Horn and Hardart Automat in Manhattan? My mom took me (I’m guessing around 1970), before it closed. This tune is for you, mom.
