ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born and raised in Israel, Shira Shaked studied under some of the best professors in the Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem academies before making the move to New York City to pursue doctoral studies in piano performance. Shira’s career highlights include recent performances with Maxim Vengerov, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and collaborations with acclaimed Israeli artists such as Natan Zach and Yair Yona, spanning various genres.

RED is Shira’s debut release of solo piano recordings, an emotionally charged recital program, accomplished through blood (figurative), sweat and tears (literal).

“The mystical poet Rainer Maria Rilke once wrote, “the only journey is the one within.” It is a sentiment best understood with experience, and for those of us who feel the seductive power of music – a time-bound art – what better medium exists for exploring that journey? Soaring melodies, intricate counterpoint, and caustic dissonances do more than accompany our inward journey; they outwardly express the passions and experiences which comprise the nuanced travels of our complex lives. This album brings together four diverse pieces intent on examining and deeply probing the emotive power of music as well as its ability to represent and enhance this journey...

...all journeys, be they musical, emotional or physical, are experienced individually: to play music, to hear music, to think, feel, and write music, all come from within. The musical journey through this album shows that, like our own lives, musical journeys are not just about moving forward in time, but are also about experience. Experience, like music, is enjoyed, regretted, repeated, and reinterpreted until, as human beings, we can experience no more.”

(Excerpt from the CD liner notes, written by Ilana R. Schroeder)
