Album Notes
When writing the thank you’s for this album (this labor of love and personal necessity), it is difficult for me to know how far back to go. Do I talk about my brother and sister, whose formative influences are why I sing and write the music that I do? Do I mention the many teachers, mentors and musicians who have given to me their time and knowledge, and whose guidance and encouragement ultimately lay the seeds for this album? I carry all of those voices with me, and you can hear them sing through the music. I’ve decide not to go back to infancy, but instead focus on those who have directly impacted the making of FIRST MAN.
FIRST MAN began in earnest when I reached out to Zephyr Avalon, after having written the song FLY (which was inspired in part when I heard he and Tina Raymond playing one week night in the fall of 2015). Through Zephyr, I met Michael Jarvey (whose commitment to the music and friendship have moved me), and Efa Etoroma Jr. (whose consistent pulse and inventiveness inspired me to name him “The Undercurrent”). With the core trio set, my writing progressed at a fevered pitch. I reached out to some of the best musicians in LA (which ‘literally’ means some of the best musicians in the world), Josh Johnson, Wendell Kelly, Josh Nelson, Justin Thomas, and Francesco Canas. These gifted and dedicated cats make me pitch myself at my great fortune of having them give so much of themselves in the service of this project. Wow!!
Through my friendships with Dave Ross, and one of my mentors, Cathy Segal-Garcia (who graces the songs FIRST MAN and FLY with her high level knowledge and musicianship), I met, and now call friend two beautiful spirits, Nolan Shaheed and Greg Poree (each of whom is a stellar musician, and whose kindness and encouragement help to propel me further into my dream).
The pursuit of a dream is often a selfish action, and it takes the understanding, patience and support from those closest around you in order to achieve it. I want to thank my family: Mom, Joshua, Solomon, Lauren, and my wonderful muse, Cherol. Thank you for weathering my bounce-off-the-walls musically energy and passion. I love you all.
- Sidney
This Album is dedicated to my sister: Hariett “Hodimo” Jacobs. Thank you for looking after me, even from the next realm.
