Second-hand Tales

by Simon Brooks, storyteller

Lively storytelling for ages 4 and up; enjoyed by ALL the family. "The children laughed and screeched and rolled around on the gym floor in delight (at least they rolled around as much as the teachers would let them).

Album Notes
I have gathered these tales from Africa, Austria, Scotland and South America. Stories grow as they are passed along the generations, and all these have grown richer and more fabulous with each re-telling. Some I read in old books, and some came as gifts from passing storytellers. And now they are my gift to you.

Long ago before books and television, children always sat in wide-eyed wonder, listening to the stories of the elders, troubadours and poets. So I invite you to listen in this same tradition – snug in your home, your car, or wherever you are – so you too may be enchanted by these tales from far away and long, long ago....

“Simon is a captivating storyteller for people of all ages. His great voices and comedy are perfectly entertaining.” - Sarah Allerton, St. Albans Library, VT

Simon is a native of the United Kingdom, but moved to the United States in 1995 to marry his fiancée, a native of central New York. Simon began storytelling in 1991, spinning yarns for school children and families when he worked for the Youth Hostel Association of England and Wales. He became a professional storyteller in 2003 after taking a position as children’s librarian at the Latham Memorial and Peabody libraries in Thetford, VT.

Simon is currently a member of the League for the Advancement of New England Storytellers (L.A.N.E.S.).

Simon lives with his wife and two children near the Connecticut River in Orford, New Hampshire.

Second Hand Tales
This is a blast! Simon Brooks has so much flexibility in his telling, which has a warm, personal feel. Here's a wonderful collection of tales to enlighten and certainly, to entertain at all levels. Enjoy his great sense of humor! A beautiful production. I love the musicality of his voice.

This CD saved our road trip!
Recently I drove my two daughters plus three of their friends from the Upper Valley to Waterbury, VT for a visit to Ben & Jerry's. The five girls, ranging in age from 5 to 9, got along well for the first part of the trip with little intervention on my part. But as we grew closer to our destination, the bickering began. In response, I put in Second-hand Tales and played the first story, Anansi. The girls quickly grew quiet and all listened raptly. By the end of that story we had reached our destination, and I promised to play the remaining stories for the ride home. Before we were even in the car for the ride home, the girls were reminding me to play the CD. I put it in, and all five girls were completely silent and mesmerized from the very first word to the very last. Your storytelling CD did the impossible: we drove for approximately one hour without one word from five girls! Thank you, thank you - maybe there is hope for family road trips after all.

An Absolute Joy
This CD was recommended to me by a friend and has turned out to be a favorite of both my children. When we received it in the mail, I put it on and both kids sat and listened to the entire TV or toys for an entire hour. They love listening to it in the car and it keeps them from bickering. Thank you.

Great Drama!
My daughter and I heard Simon in person so we got his CD. When we play the CD she is completely focused on the stories. Simon uniquely creates each character, makes the water and wind come alive, and is an all around story teller. I can't help but stop and listen too!
