Album Notes
‘Triadic Variations’ was composed for solo piano in the spring of 2013 at the request of Ute Schröder (to whom the work is dedicated). She asked for an ‘endless’ piece utilizing the major triad. Most of my music uses a very restricted pallet of seven notes (diatonic) and I was slightly concerned at what would result with even further reduction, but in the end I found the three notes (and octaves) ample material to work with. The term ‘variations’ generally implies a certain approach to composition, but my version is merely variations in the arrangement of the triadic material, not an excuse for virtuosity or clever transformations.
