ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Simu Lev began in 2000 during a class on the mystical elements of the Sabbath. The teacher, Arik Labowitz, would play a song on his guitar to begin and end each class. Maxxine Smith, one of the participants, brought her flute to accompany the songs. Ultimately this became one of the highlights of the class experience.

After hearing the two musicians play together, a good friend volunteered to record a CD of the music – and Simu Lev was born. Since then Arik and Maxxine have recorded two CDs of Jewish music – Simu Lev (untitled) and Revive.

The Hebrew name, Simu Lev, literally means “Give your heart”, and is colloquially translated in Israel as “Pay attention.” We thought that both of these meanings were equally as relevant in our approach to music and Jewish spiritual practice (hence the logo: a Star of David with a heart in the center).

Our music quiets the mind, uplifts the soul and brings joy to the heart!
