ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Sine Nomine is a contemporary chamber chorus in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 2006, our mission is to build and reflect an inclusive, inviting community. Through music, we share an optimistic message fostering peace and acceptance. This CD has been produced with your enjoyment in mind. Thanks for your support.

Sine Nomine prepares and performs the works of contemporary composers, and excels at presenting themes reflecting the wonders of nature and the intention of change. "What a wonderful world this is" and "We are all in this together" are themes that can be felt in all of their performances.

"Breath of Heaven" is a stunning arrangement of the song made popular by Amy Grant. The story of Mary's response to being told she would bear God's son into the world is reflective of our taking on the mission of bringing peace into the world. "Help me be strong; help me be; help me."

"Sure on this Shining Night" is perhaps one of the most beautiful compositions of Morten Lauridsen, who is also known for his stunning Magnum Mysterium. The text of poet James Agee rings clear, "Sure on this shining night of star made shadows round; kindness must watch for me this time around."

"There Will Be Rest" is James Ticheli's setting of Sara Teasdale's deeply moving poetry. While the text was among her last works, and may have been her suicide note, it speaks to us more of finding peace and rest in a world of unrest. "There will be rest, and sure stars rising... I will make this world of my devising, out of a dream... I shall find the crystal of peace."

"Angel Breathing Out" is rhythmic and energetic, the music and text of Alisa Bair. In the midst of a tempest and wild nature, the force of the wind itself is the breath of an angel bringing calm.

Billy Joel's gorgeous and contemplative "And So It Goes" speak of heartbreak, and the willingness to trust again. This a cappella arrangement from the King's Singers is lush and gorgeous.

"Send in the Clowns" is brought to life by Darmon Meader's a cappella arrangement, filled with complex harmony and rhythm. Again, in the heart of desperation there remains hope.

"Somewhere," from West Side Story, carries one of Sine Nomine's mission statements: There is a time for us, a place for us.

Renee Clausen is a masterful composer, and his soaring setting of the words of Mother Teresa of Calcutta lives up to high expectations. "Help me spread your fragrance wherever I go. Flood my soul with your spirit and love; penetrate and possess my whole being. SHINE through me so utterly that all my life may be a radiance of your love. Let them look up and see not only me, but only you."

Shawn Kirchner's setting of the text "Morning has Broken" is clear and strong and moving.

Z. Randall Stroope's original "Omnia Sol" is a magnificent work which starts introspectively, remembering the past and the lessons that give us the strength to take on our goal and mission: "Let courage be your oar, let passion be your sail. Wisdom and truth will guide your deep heart's yearning through all travail."
