Album Notes
Piaf/Brel:Chanteuse/Chansonnier resurrects the spirits of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel alongside the greatest of French singers and songwriters, whose work has become a part of the French culture, whose sound is nostalgia, tragedy and joy, --- the romance of post-World War France. American listeners will know french originals “Les Feuilles Mortes” as “Autumn Leaves,” and “La Mer” as “Beyond the Sea.”

Backed by a five-piece ensemble for four studio and 8 live-performance tracks, Siri Vik and pianist Nathalie Fortin assimilate these nostalgic songs through a modern lens while remaining true to their original musical spirit. Siri sings with the intensity and style of the first great French chanteuses, yet in pursuit of the authentic, her delivery and interpretations are both modern and personal.

Reviews from live performance of La Vie en rose: Chanteuse/Chansonnier
“As the light came up on the pianist and Siri Vik’s pitch-perfect soprano began, my heart shattered in the best possible way... I have never heard [La Vie en Rose] the way Vik sang it. I heard it in my bones, with a shiver and a gasp.... Pink’s “Please Don’t Leave Me” may be all over popular radio right now, but Brel’s writing, and Vik’s performance of his “Ne Me Quitte Pas,” put the pop star to shame... By the end, we were left with nothing but her pleading voice and the slow thump of the bass and all its loss and pain and fear and desperation and grief. And I believed her. I can honestly say that this ovation-inspiring concert was one of the best shows I have ever had the pleasure of attending. I have never, in ten years of writing about music, been moved to tears by any of it. When people spoke of operas or classical pieces inspiring such a reaction, I thought it was hyperbole. Maybe I’ve just been listening to the wrong music.”
---Jennifer Kristiansen, The Register-Guard

“Vik is at her best at gritty, emotional and strange material, and the music of Brel could be her lifeblood.” ---Bob Keefer, Art & The City

“What a wonderful performance...the flawless piano work of Nathalie Fortin and the incredible vocals and theater of a very dedicated artist named Siri.  We look forward to seeing you again as does our stunned audience.”  ---Greg Cramer, Marshanne Music Series
