ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Earthy and enjoyable" -- Early Music America
"Kleinerman's overall playing takes a middle path between folkish vigor and classical formality.... It feels right, and there's an indefinable attractiveness to the whole project that puts the listener in touch with what made these durable tunes." -- AllMusic.com

John Playford's seventeenth-century tunebook The English Dancing Master -- expanded and reissued every few years well into the eighteenth century -- contains a wealth of deceptively simple English country dance tunes that are wonderfully varied and full of personality and charm. Today, these tunes are most often heard with large-band ensembles or with modern chordal instruments. Yet in the seventeenth century, pictures of people dancing to these tunes most often show just two instruments playing, usually two melody instruments. What happens to the melodies if they are returned to their original context? The two instruments are set free to establish a moment-by-moment musical exploration full of playful one-upmanship and gracious exchange. All of the English Dancing Master tunes here are presented in new duo arrangements in the styles of the period, with each collaborator bringing something different to the table.

Shulamit Kleinerman specializes in off-shoulder technique on renaissance violin and medieval vielle. She studied baroque violin in London with Monica Huggett on a Hertz Fellowship from the University of California, Berkeley, after graduating in 1999 with a double major in English and music. Living in Seattle since 2000, she is a founding member of the award-winning Elizabethan quartet Plaine & Easie and the crossover vielle duo Cinnamon Bird. Shula maintains a full private studio of modern violin and early-instrument students and is the founder and director of Seattle Historical Arts for Kids, which has recently released its first CD, Merry it is!, in 2010.
