Album Notes
The SLACK FAMILY began life over 20 years ago performing in the streets and back alley’s of Richmond to enthusiastic, bar-hopping listeners. Today this family of “brothers from different mothers” is creating energetic, diverse and infectious music featuring three part vocal harmonies and a wide variety of influences that give more than a nod to the way “it used to was”. This blend of traditional, contemporary and original tunes with mass appeal for all ages renders music their fans affectionately dub "slackgrass”.

The band was crowned the 2014 Virginia State Bluegrass Champions and just recently released “Graceful Drifters,” their fourth CD release, and the first in ten years! The CD, with 12 original and four cover songs, is a slight departure from the band’s traditional bluegrass past. Although the traditional and contemporary bluegrass sound is still present on some songs, others capture an Americana feel reminiscent of The Byrd’s and New Riders of the Purple Sage.
The band entered the studio to record two Christmas songs in the September of 2019. Amazing Love and Hillbilly Santa Claus were written by Joe Wharff and are the band’s first holiday songs from the band.

The band includes Joe Wharff of guitar and lead vocals, Andy Burns on mandolin and vocals, Nick Harlow on banjo, Greg Harrup on upright bass and vocals, Dave Kuo on guitar, and Jesse Wells on fiddle. On occasions where a drummer is added, the band is honored to welcome Lance Koehler.
