Album Notes
Once upon a time, December of 1989 to be exact, 3 guys from Ohio and 1 guy from Pennsylvania played
music together for the first time in a small rehearsal room in Van Nuys, CA. A particular sound was
made from the chemistry of these 4 individuals that felt both new and familiar. All 4 had grown up
passionately and zealously listening to, learning and playing all of the various styles of popular music
from the 1950s through the 1980s. All 4 were able to recall in an instant and on instinct all of the
different songs and styles of music they had digested. This was the genesis of a genuine band named
Slammin’ Gladys.

Dave Brooks was supposedly born on a pool table in Geneva-on-the-Lake in Ohio. Dave is a natural born
singer, an unnaturally born leader and a gifted, entertaining front man with the flair of Elvis Presley and
the humor of Dave Chapelle. There is no doubt by anyone who has ever met him, knows him or has
heard him that he was put here on Earth to sing. It has been his desire, his passion and his inevitable
destiny. As it turns out singing, writing songs and entertaining crowds has defined his life and is what he
does best. Before moving to Los Angeles in the late 1980s Dave was already a local celebrity in Ohio.
Dave has found as much success being the ring leader at a loud rock and roll show as he has serenading
a fortunate girl privately with only his voice and his acoustic guitar.

JJ Farris was born in the Cleveland suburbs and came to Los Angeles in 1988. When he was in his
formative teenage years he poured himself into his guitar. JJ has always had an enviable focus when he
finds something he is passionate about. Guitar playing by the 1980s proved to be a wide-open field of
adventure and discovery while he was defining his sound. Guitar music had by this time dominated the
Billboard charts for 4 decades. JJ soaked it all up. His open mind and discipline would ensure he would
not be just another one-dimensional guitar player like so many other rock and roll guitar players of the
late 1980s and early 1990s. At the same time he was also passionate about developing his singing and
songwriting abilities. Today he is also an accomplished composer who scores movies and TV shows. He
plays piano and bass among other instruments and can program music as well as any EDM DJ. He is a
genius savant. JJ lives at the beach but does not surf.

Al “Alley” Collins is the gravity and the glue of Slammin’ Gladys. Also from the Cleveland suburbs Al
journeyed to Los Angeles with his band Plain Jane in the mid 1980s. Realizing that the music he was
playing with Plain Jane would not allow him to grow as a musician he decided to take a chance and find
a band of players that would allow him to play melodic, funky, hard and fluid all at the same time. He
was conscious that his unique take on bass had something to offer artistically and musically. He felt that
what excited him about his approach to bass also had the potential to excite listeners. Al is also an
accomplished singer and songwriter who can play a mean guitar. He regularly travels the world playing
his bass. He is a hard man to pin down.

Stephen DeBoard was born and raised in Harrisburg, PA and came to Los Angeles in 1988 looking for a
band that would allow him to rock hard and keep the beat funky at the same time. He started playing at
local clubs and bars in PA when he was 17 and that is when he first realized that after all is said and
done, people just want great music to fall in love with and fall in love to. He wanted to play drums ever
since he could remember. When asked by his elementary school to pick 3 instruments to play in the
school band his choices were drums, drums and drums. He was the last member to join the band. He is
also passionate about singing, playing guitar, playing bass and writing songs. Stephen lives at the beach
but does not surf.

According to legend, the inception of Slammin’ Gladys happened when JJ recognized Dave from his local
celebrity days in Ohio as he fell out of a car in front of The Rainbow Bar and Grill on Sunset Blvd. in West
Hollywood, CA. They became roommates and song writing partners soon after.

When these 4 guys got together for the first time they realized almost immediately that each guy
fulfilled what the other 3 were looking for in a bandmate. Like many other great bands each member
could have been a lead singer. Stephen was able to lay the solid foundation with beats and drum fills
that became signature parts of the songs, Al brought the thunder, the punch and the melody to the low
end that supported JJ’s soaring guitars and locked with Stephen’s drumming perfectly, JJ brought the
crunchy rock guitar along with the clean and dynamic funk and blues lines and Dave brought the power,
range and the sensitivity that defines all great lead singers.

The Sunset Strip in the late 1980s and early 1990s was something out of a rock and roll dream or
nightmare depending on your perspective. Although this scene has been well documented it was really
something that had to be experienced to completely understand what it was all about. Long hair,
leather pants and makeup on guys and girls, a friendly competitiveness, a party atmosphere and
musicians doing whatever possible to attract attention and gain an audience for their shows was the
name of the game. Slammin’ Gladys, then known as Risque, immersed themselves in this scene. They
would rehearse every day and troll the strip like clockwork every Friday and Saturday night unless they
were playing a show. Realizing the necessity to stick out from the huge crowd and also wanting to
contribute some positivity to this scene they became known as the band who attached condoms to the
flyers promoting their shows.

Playing their music with their unique sound in this scene proved challenging. Realizing they were
different they started labelling their genre of music as “Prince meets Aerosmith” in order to give their
potential audience something familiar to grasp onto. This was their life from 1989-1991.

Eventually the crowds and then the record labels began to take notice. So did Al’s previous lead singer
from Plain Jane, Jani Lane, who by this time was regularly featured on MTV and radio with his band
Warrant. Jani decided to give his old friends from Ohio a boost and took them to Sound City recording
studios to produce a professional demo. He also introduced Slammin’ Gladys to the attorneys,
managers and accountants that Warrant secured. This tape made its rounds through all the Hollywood
and New York record labels. Eventually Priority Records decided that Slammin’ Gladys would sandwich
nicely between The California Raisins and Ice Cube and signed the band to a 2 album deal. They did it!
They secured the elusive record deal!

The band records and releases their debut self-titled album in 1992. The guys then tour the USA for 2 1⁄2
years. Everything they worked hard for seems to be coming to fruition. They have a video on the MTV
show Headbanger’s Ball, they are being played on radio stations across the country, they are on several
cable video shows and they are being written about in magazines including regular features in the
magazine Metal Edge. Their audience is building and seems to get bigger and more enthusiastic at every
show. They are making their way up the east coast of America when BAM, their tour suddenly ends
because of an unforeseen tragedy that occurred with the headlining band. Slammin’ Gladys were days
away from multiple press conferences in New York, a Japanese tour was being planned and songs were
being written and recorded for their second album. Thinking this was just a stumbling block the band
reconvened in Los Angeles only to discover that Priority Records was no longer on board and wanted to
buy them out of their contract. Slammin’ Gladys realized instantly that bands from Los Angeles were
suddenly out of fashion and bands from Seattle were now in fashion in 1995.

Slammin’ Gladys broke up.

The 4 guys in the band did not fight with each other (too much!) and the brotherly love that developed
over the years had only grown. The talents of the bandmates continued to grow and manifest in
different ways through the years.

Fast Forward to 2018.

JIB Machine Records approaches Dave Brooks at one of his shows in Cleveland and discusses reissuing
Slammin’ Gladys’ first album. This gives Dave, JJ, Al and Stephen just a big enough excuse to explore the
musical possibilities of Slammin’ Gladys in the 21st Century. Each band member has continued to play
music regularly since the end of chapter 1 so there would be little if any catching up. At first the plan
was to add a few bonus tracks to the reissue. However, after writing some new songs and going
through previously unrecorded and unfinished music the band realized that there are more than just a
few gems to mine for bonus tracks. Everyone unanimously agreed to let JJ produce the new recordings.
The band entered a North Hollywood recording studio on August 20, 2018 and recorded basic tracks for
7 new songs in one day.

The first single “Dragon Eye Girl” is the first offering from these sessions. The song perfectly
encapsulates the unique Slammin’ Gladys sound and delivers it to a new generation. Just like they
always have been able to do, Slammin’ Gladys is creating music that is both new and familiar at the
same time.
