Slow Horses

Album Notes
This German band is almost certainly the best modern country outfit in
Europe with the musical and vocal ability to stand side-by-side any of the
major Nashville-based acts without in any way being relegated to second
best. Unlike the majority of UK-based country bands that go around the same
old clippity-clop country music clubs, performing second-rate covers of
country hits spanning the past fifty-odd years all carefully arranged to
suit the latest line-dances, Slow Horses perform their own original material
spanning country, Americana, swing and country-rock. This thirteen track
album-their third-contains thought provoking lyrics that are lyrical and
expressive and are well balanced with a focused blend of instruments.

Gaby Schmidt's lead vocals are delightful and the harmonies complement them
perfectly, as listeners will be able to hear on such songs as Full Moon
Fever and Tom Wait's Time, the solitary cover on this powerful mix of
country-pop and country-rock that has some real soul. Soothing electric
guitar complements the peaceful vocals on the insightful Riding in the Rain,
swirling keyboards and building beats give Rough Seas a vibrant and
energetic vibe while Gaby takes the helm with her tough, vocal attitude.
Later in the album, the pedal steel on Back in 1948 gives the song the
reflective touch the band was looking to achieve. Among other tracks, Right
From The Star has some great use of banjo and Gimme More is a solid slice of
honky-tonk, with a hot guitar riff and punchy vocals. If you enjoy gutsy,
passionate vocals backed by a talented band, then this CD would make an
excellent addition to your collection.
