Album Notes
“The Price of Freedom” (released in France in May 2005), is the latest production of the small independent label BLACKSWING REEKORDZ, and the first CD for the duo Sly Athann & Gillian O'Donovan. The style is up to the minute pop with a large helping of soul, the emotional range of the songs is large, from the lost love of “without you”, the electro rage of “one love is not enough”, the unsettling undercurrent of menace in “till the sun went down” to a classic pop song “The hardest goodbye” (follow the links to see the video clip for this single). At the time of writing, feb 2006, the single is n° 3 in the download electro charts of Korea.

This Anglo/French duo based in France won the largest Internet contest in Europe, WANADOO DISCOVERIES EUROPE 2005 (80,000 votes cast). They won the UK competition and then faced acts from France, Spain and the Netherlands in the final (all signed to major labels with serious publicity machines). The result was announced live at the NIKAIA stadium in Nice. Sly & Gillian demonstrated the power of Internet to put independent artists of quality in direct contact with a large public, without the need to conform to the stereotypes of the music industry.
The prize was the production of a video clip for the single and a nationwide publicity campaign.

Sly Athann created a local radio station in 1992 and produced a program called Black Swing in 1997, broadcast on 260 radio stations around the world.
He has produced a dozen records under the name Steve Austeen.
June 2000 : First album « The last world » (released in France & Germany by DECK8/ZOMBA)
May 2002 : Album : Criminal sound
August 2002 : Signature with the publisher Jean Davoust. Some titles were compiled in France but also in the US
March 2003 : The title « Please Lord » was released in the USA, and made the USA charts.
Feb 2004 : Steve Austeen became Sly Athann.
November 2004 : A cover of "like this" was recorded in Korea by 'Kyun-Woo'

Gillian O’Donovan, singer, songwriter and actress, has been a professional singer for 20 years. Originally from London, she has toured the world with many different groups (backing vocalist with Eurythmics, Jo Cocker, Phil Collins, John Cale, Brian May and Roger Taylor of QUEEN amongst others..) before moving to Brittany in 1990. She recorded with Alan Stivell, started several projects such as Quest (electro/ trip hop), a jazz quartet, and, in 2003,a jazz duo (D'AC) with the bass guitarist Etienne Callac.
In 2001, she met Sly Athann and a songwriting partnership began. The first track released was "Like This" .

MySpace delivers again - knockout vocals and tasty production
The stand out tracks on this CD (Without U,The Price of Freedom,The Hardest Goodbye, Keep it in the Family, Save Me From Myself,Like This) offer fresh, uplifting sounds effortlessly combining Gillian's magical vocals with Sly's tasty production and beats. Throw in some beautiful guitar from players like Antoine Madec and the end result is a compelling snap shot of contemporary pop with an R&B flavour. The only reservation about the whole experience is track 5 Welcome to The Babies featuring "vocals" by 3 babies.......hey we all love our children but, with all due respect, this track is a huge distraction and requres skipping. That aside, a CD to be recommended without doubt.
