ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Been A Long Time Comin' is a nice blend of Jazz, Funk, R&B and Soul with an urban feel. The Smooth Jazz Alley is a San Francisco Bay Area project that was formed by guitarist Stanley Evans and keyboardist Marco Montoya who wanted to use their songwriting and music skills to create an album with a smooth jazz feel that had an urban vibe. Been A Long Time Comin' is a product of their idea in creating a relaxing sound that you can chill to.

Song Notes

C-Funk: An upbeat track originally written in the early 90's by Ken Solis, was updated and remade by Marco Montoya & Stanley Evans in 2014 and features Kenny Franklin on bass.

Always & Forever: Originally written in the early 90's and recorded as a love ballad by Marco Montoya. This was another song updated with the writing skills of Stanley Evans. Always & Forever features Kenny Franklin on bass and Miguel Melgoza on drums.

Been A Long Time Comin': Another uptempo smooth jazz groove written by Marco Montoya & Stanley Evans, featuring Kenny Franklin on bass and Miguel Melgoza on drums.

Midnight Groove: A nice mellow slow chill tune written by Stanley Evans and Marco Montoya who perform all instruments.

Eternal: Written by Marco Montoya & Mona Attia. Originally featured on Mona Attia's 2007 album entitled Vision, Eternal was an R&B slow jam that we reincarnated as a Neo Soul/Smooth Jazz groove. Eternal is featuring Kenny Franklin on bass and Miguel Melgoza on drums.

Why: Another song written by Marco Montoya & Mona Attia, originally featured on Mona Attia's 2007 album entitled Vision. This instrumental version features a smooth blend of vocals by Lawrence Beamen & Mona Attia. All instruments performed by Marco Montoya & Stan Evans.

Christina: A fusion of Latin Jazz and Smooth Jazz with a Bossa feel. Written by Marco Montoya to celebrate the birth of his daughter Christina featuring Kenny Franklin on bass, Eric Mendez on drums & Latin percussion and Bill Ortega, Jr. on trumpet.

Subway: An urban track originally written while riding underground on Bart (commuter train in San Francisco Bay Area.) Written by Marco Montoya & Stanley Evans, featuring Kenny Franklin on bass and Miguel Melgoza on drums.

Morning Jog: A smooth groove to listen to & originally written right after a morning jog. Written by Marco Montoya & Stanley Evans, featuring Kenny Franklin on bass and Miguel Melgoza on drums.

Stan's Groove: The song that started it all! This was Stan & Marco's first collaboration back in the late 90's. This 5th version that made the final cut on the album was written by Marco Montoya & Stanley Evans, featuring Kenny Franklin on bass and Miguel Melgoza on drums.

SMOOTHJAZZ.COM REVIEW
Forming their powerhouse guitar and keyboard duo, The Smooth Jazz Alley in the wake of the breakup of their Bay Area Latin fusion band Grupo Caribe, Stan Evans and Marco Montoya’s debut BEEN A LONG TIME COMIN’ features a dynamic mix of tasty, in the pocket, Smooth Jazz grooves with lead melodies powered by Evans' fluid electric guitar and Montoya’s playful piano and keys. With nods to the exotic music of their past, this album’s BEEN A LONG TIME COMIN’, but entirely worth the wait!

After over 3 decades of combined musical experience, Stan Evans and Marco Montoya, also known as The Smooth Jazz Alley have nailed their collaborative melodic voices. Their expansive talents have translated into quite the groove in their first full-length album, “Been A Long Time Comin’”.
The album opens up with the tune, C-Funk. Laying the foundation for the energy and tracks on this album, C-Funk starts out with an upbeat rhythm that seamlessly moves into the body of the tune. Stan’s electro-acoustic style adds a second dimension all the while offering a solid groove for listeners. Marco’s versatility and style throughout the tune is sophisticated and unwavering. The album continues with the tunes, Always and Forever and the title track, Been A Long Time Comin’. Featuring a very relaxed style and solo, both are a smooth transition from the more buoyant first track.
Other tracks of note on the album include Christina and Stan’s Groove. Sentimentally rounded, Christina is emotionally fitting to render thoughts of the love we carry for our children. Aptly named after Marco’s daughter, Christina is a love song that only a father could write. Stan’s Groove, according to Stan himself, provided the impetus for the album’s conception. A decade after it was first recorded, the album as a whole finally came together. Rendered from Stan’s early musical influences, the dynamite yet memorable backbeat sets the pace. A fun ride for the ears from start to finish, this tune is the best track of the album.

Throughout the album, Marco’s accompaniment seems to tether off of Stan’s forefront stance. In tune-after-tune, Marco found a way to enhance and fortify Stan’s solo work. This makes for true a balanced musical chemistry that is truly pleasing to the ears. Highly recommended, Been A Long Time Comin,’ is one album that listeners of all levels will enjoy for years to come.
