ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Live at Jazzland
It’s been a long time ambition of mine to record at Jazzland - a place where I was honoured to spend so many years refining my craft. Living in Vienna for the past 10 years I have had the opportunity to play with many talented musicians from all over the world at this great historic club, now celebrating its 46th year. The lifeblood of the club is of course Axel, whose founding idea it was to bring these great players to Vienna to perform with local musicians in the true Jazz spirit of sharing, improvising and making music together in the moment. It has been a great experience learning from the masters every night on the bandstand.
For Jazz musicians feeling at ease in a place where you perform is a blessing . And the “Landl”, as the Viennese call it, is an inspirational place where I always feel at home. The moment you step inside the club you are surrounded by photos of so many Jazz legends who played right there in this very club and you feel embraced by the larger Jazz family and get a sense of being part of this great legacy. All the musicians back then as well as now fondly remember the spicey, hearty Viennese cooking that does a world of good – having a huge impact on a successful evening!
We hope that the “Landl” will be there for us for many years to come, managed just as warm-heartedly as it has been from day one by Axel and Tilly Melhardt.
I got to know David Blenkhorn in 2012. Besides being a good friend of mine, he is also a talented guitarist steeped in the older styles of Jazz like Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and bluesmen like Lonnie Johnson. Dave is the guitarist of choice for many touring artists from the US and an established band leader in his own right. He is always inventive and in search of new inspiration all the while remaining a straight forward Jazz musician whose roots, like mine, are firmly embedded in the Blues....a true soul brother.
Karol Hodas plucks the double bass the way it should be played, both as a solid rhythmical support for the trio without a drummer with his great groove and feel, and also as a lyrical and inventive soloist when the music calls for it.
The trio has turned out the way I always imagined it for so long: I‘ve always loved this chamber music-like style and it has been an integral part of my life for all those years.
Thank you guys!
